most people I know like the 89-92 mkIIIs, the tail lights are different, and I think the front end changed in like 1990 w/ the split grill. I believe performance is the same in all years, whether it's turbo or n/a.
biggest problem the mkIII has is, BHG; blown head gasket. a HUGE pain in the ass to replace on those cars, and when you do have to replace it's better to shell out the money, have the block and head surfaced, get a metal head gasket and ARP head studs so the head gasket will not blow again

The 89+ choice is purely cosmetic, steering wheel, gauges, bumper, slightly lower, 3-peice wing, 3-peice tails, cruise control moved off the steering wheel. Just to clarify tanya's statement, stock turbo's had 232hp, n/a's had 200hp. If I was looking for the best year I would get a 92, just because it's the rarest MKIII. The only change after 89 was the five spoke 16's (n/a MKIV rims) in 90, a small underdash panel, and the airbag steering wheel.

i have a 88 supra n/a, so far the only problem i've found is that the master cylinder went bad...but i mean...i imagine noone ever changed that oil in what? 15 years? anyways....pretty tough machine..and i haven't done anything to it....mine is auto and it runs great

The turbos gained 2 horses in 89. Definetly a deal breaker right??? Seriously, it is all cosmetic. Newer is usually better just for reliability. Age hurts things. I say this as I'm about to buy an 86.5...........

i don't think they had the turbo model for 86.5, but 91/92 model does have airbags. I personally had an 87 turbo/targa, and that thing hauled ass. Yep, I too had a BHG, but thankfully, i was a highschool autoshop student, so i had the tools and equipment to fix everythinh else, and resurface my valve, clean the head, and i did the tops of my pistons to improve compression.besides that, that car ran like a bat out of hell, and where else can you find blue leather racing seats with good lumbar support? A supra!
