Why??

Mercedes recently launched their new MPV a replacement for the dyer V-Class. This looks no better, its boxy, based on a van and uses underpowered engines. So why, is one of the best car makers in the world making the worst MPV in the world.

Why, could'nt Mercedes worked with sister company Chrsyler to develop a replacement for the V-Class and Voyager/Town & Country at the same time. For a start it would be cheaper(in the long run) and the car would probably be more competent. It seems to me that Mercedes could'nt really care about the MPV sector so it just whips up a van with windows and seats.

I have always pondered the same question

Wonder if its because SUVs are now the trend and there is not much demand for peoplemovers as we call them

MPVs(Peoplemovers) are still pretty popular with families and so are SUVs. You would think Merc would be a class leader. We'll they are launching the big new R-Class which will be cross between SUV & MPV.

They tend to be used as taxies in the UK. I suppose that they are quite cheap for the job that they do. But still, thats not the sort of thing that you expect from MB. Maybe the V - Class is supposed to be more of a comercial 'car' than an MPV.

The A -class is only a 5 seater, so thats a hatch, which leaves us with the R class. A cross between S, ML, and the V classes. A large luxury 7 seat people mover, with 4x4 and off road capabilities...

Iv only ever seen the V class used as luxury mini bus, its IMO to big to be used as an MPV, and is clearly targeted at the commercial market.

That said, Merc does lack an MPV model, but then should the worlds foremost mass produced luxury car maker be making MPVs?

They could still produce a model which slots in-between the Viano and the R-Class. Which could also be badged of as a replacement for the ageing(but excellent)Town & Country/Voyager and Caravan ranges from sister company Chrysler. This would be beneficial for both marques, which are both lacking in this market place. They could also use the new Mitsubishi Grandis platform to produce a better MPV.
