Hi there,
It looks like the driver's side window on my BMW is off the track. It moves up and down, but it makes a terrible grinding noise in the process. How expensive is a fix like this and is it easy to do.

Thanks!

Time to replace the window regulator, a common failure on e46. Make sure the seal is intact behind the door panel or you will have a major water leak inside the car.

Hi,

I noticed the same symptom in my car. After I tried open/close several times, the window is now stuck permanently. It does not respond anymore. How did you get your problem fixed ? Was it the regulator as someone suggested.

Thanks

A grinding noise is 100% give away its a window regulator. It didnt come off the track, the cables that pull the window up and down got tangled up and dont work correctly. Sramiah your cables got completly thrown off the track and are hanging in the air not pulling on anything. A window regulator at a dealer costs about 100$ around that. Not including labor pay.

Also if you plan on doing this you need some specicility tools (torx T10 and a T30, 10mm deep socket or a 10mm shalow with an extention. 8mm deep socket to take the window off the regulator.)

Overall it should cost about 150$ at a dealer to put it in. If you need a new motor they also cost 1round 100$ not including labor.
