My 99' GA SE has the same stupid security light problem it seems like everyone else has. My car computer will reset without the key in the ignition after exactly 10 minutes. I know this after being stranded in parking lots way too often. Had a dealer check it out, they thought the key was dirty. That didn't help. The BIG pontiac dealership in town had no idea what was wrong with it. They quoted me at around 300$ to "try" and replace the ignition, and see what happens.
From what i've noticed, and these are just some observations, my car only does it when A. i turn the key too fast B. When its a really hot day and its been sitting in the sun a long time. C. When i least expect it. Those probably aren't helpful. :)
I've considered putting in a switch on one of the battery terminals so that when the security light does come on, a guy could turn the power off and on and make it go away. This way i could atleast get going instead of waiting 10 min. Anyone have any suggestion about this if it would work?

Gm had a recall on there ignition switch problems. They were going to add a relay before the ignition switch. If it had burned contacts, or security light issues, they were going to replace the ignition switch.
Good luck

I know this sounds stupid. But my locksmith cut me my pontiac key and said you have to program the key into the car. He said yes i know it sounds stupid and there is NO chip in them. But i watched him do it I think he put the key in the ingnion and turn the car on accy only postion. Then waited for all the lights go off. The sercurty light was flashing. Then did this 3 more times. The 3rd time the security light didn't flash and went out. I don't know what the heck he did but i have never had problems. Maybe hes a moron but don't have any problems. Also i have heard those passlock systems are horrible and have problems alot. You might have a bad one?? I hope this helps at all. I might be wrong on what he excatly did. And he might not know what hes doing but just and idea?

I'm bring it to the dealer tomorrow, supposedly the typical cause is a faulty security sensor in the ignition switch that is supposed to recognize the key.

replacing the ignition cylinder seems to have fixed the problem. it cost about $235 to have the dealer replace it. supposedly it required some reprogramming to recognize the old keys, so i didn't tackle it myself.

I bought the new lock today $172 ouch and now I need to take it to a lock snith to put in the pins. The stearlership was no help at all. I don't no anything about having to program it.
