Lite flywheels

Does anyone have a lightened flywheel? how heavy is it? Is it dodgy if I go and get my flywheel lightened and balanced? how much is a new, not heavy one? And I think that I have been using the wrong light/lite, who knows!?

A member just bought the JUN light flywheel. Its 11lbs I think. The ultra-light is 10ish. He stalled his car alot when he first got it.
You can get your current fly wheel lightened but not to the extent of the JUN units. Also there is a chance that the lightened stock wheels will fail prematurely

Fidanza makes even better ones for our SR20DE.
I never heard of them until Mike Kojima told me to get one. You can get them
for about $300 to 350 which is much cheaper than JUN. Oh yeah, the best part is it weighs only 8 lbs which is a big impovement. Our stock ones weigh about 18 lbs.
You can get the stock one lighted (about 4lbs taken off) but the aftermarket ones are way stronger.
JUN ULW=9.7 lbs
JUN LW=10.6 lbs
Fidanza=8.1 lbs

I would be a little worried about going too light on a daily driven flywheel. I don't know but Dom (D-protech) had a tough time getting home after he got his flywheel installed. :) Said he stalled it about 12 times. You basically have to relearn how to drive the car again. He metioned that 1500rpm was the minimum launch speed so that he didn't stall! I don't know how much worse it would be with an even lighter flywheel.
I'd save the Fidanza one for a more dedicated racer. Or at least a car you have striped out.
Actually I just took a look at the Fidanza wheel. While my thoughts about being too light for a daily driver still stand, I think they would be better made than the JUN. One resurface is all about the JUN has in it. The Fidanza is nice because it looks like it has a replaceable friction surface that can just be replaced giving it a much longer life.
Sounds like you're going for the Fidanza however there brian. :D Let us know how it goes.

is it true you cant resurface lightened flywheels? well i now know the Fidanza on you can replace the friction plate, but how about the JUN? how long should it be before resurfacing the flywheel?

Ok so what are the drawbacks on geting a ULFW or LFW? If the car is going to be staling would this be avoided if we moved the timing up?
Its a mod i would like to get but i know very little about it, please advize

No it doesn't just stall the the hell of it. When you start to drive you need to put more revs into your launch that's all.

Well if you have to replace your clutch ever you should get the flywheel resurfaced. I think the JUN should stand up to at least one resurfacing.

Re-worded from G-Forces....You have to rev the motor a little more before you apply the load to the engine from the tranny.

I had my stock flywheel lightened when i installed my clutch. It went from right around 18-19lbs to 13.5lbs (about). I unfortunately didn't get any exact numbers on teh flywheel :( It did make a nice difference. It helps the car rev quicker. With where mine is at now, it did take getting used to, you can bog the car VERY easily, and launching at the track takes A LOT of practice.... If I were to ever get the money i would go with a lightened flywheel lighter than mine, but that's because i'm already used to it, and eventually want the car to be a track car, or a fun car, not my daily driver. For a daily driver I wouldn't go below the 11lb one, it'd be too easy to bog or stall in traffic, as you'd probably have to rev to almost 2k before you could go normally. Also, 8lb seems VERY extreme, i didn't know they were that light, where did you find the weight?

Oh yeah, check this out too, doesn't list the sr20 application, but they have a contact, if anyone is looking for a flywheel cheap.

Uh.....
You got that backwards. The engine applies load to the tranny, not the other way around.
What you need to do is get the engine to overcome the inertia of the drivetrain and the car itself.

Guys.....
Y'all have to take off the skirts when you drive your cars. :D
I had an aluminum Clutchmasterbaters flywheel in my SE-R. I had the stock flywheel lightened when I got my G. Now I have a JWT aluminum flywheel in the G with the DET......
It doesn't take long to get used to. Shit guys, my G20 is my wife's car and she's never stalled it with either low mass flywheel. In fact, I don't even think twice about it. I'd like an even lower mass flywheel. :D
That said, I think a low mass flywheel is a great mod. It's one that when pondering on paper it's hard to tell if it's worth it. Even after installing one, some people are not sure it made a different. BUT, most people really really love it. It helps bring the car alive. Nothing like having your engine rev more quickly. It's one of those things that seems subtle. Then you drive a car with a stock flywheel ( with similar mods) and you realize how much it improves things.
IMHO

AWWW MAN!.... come on that skirt cost me.... umm.. well... uhhh nevermind :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:
As for the description, it was right on, but i truthfully noticed a pretty big difference right away, i didn't think it was that subtle. It was one of, if not the best mod i've done so far. The Primera cam was another really nice, inexpensive mod that helped a lot too. Next time i have to install a clutch in my car, i'll probably go with an even lighter flywheel, but by then i doubt it'll be my everyday car either. I'm thinking the lighter the better by that point :D

Me neither. But, some folks have thought it was.

What's the weight on those? I wasn't saying it's not a good mod. My concern is going too light on a daily driver. Maintaining civility in a daily might still be a factor on some peoples list. After all thats why we drive elegant G20's and not those butchy Classics. :p
BTW your opinion is hardly ever humble. ;)
