93 safari trans slips after filter change help

A while back I changed the transmission filter on my 93 Safari. I thought the trans kind of jerked when going into 2nd or 3rd when it was cold. I followed the procedure from my manual up the torques specified. I added 3.5 ( of a total 5 recommended ) quarts of fluid and started up and the level reached normal for cold. I then drove the van and it slipped. I added another 1/2 quart and it indicated above normal for cold. Again I drove it and it didn't slip. The next morning I drove it and it slipped and indicated high for hot. Later that day I drained the level back down to normal and it slipped. Then I added enough to complete the total of 5 quarts and I does not slip but indicates about 2" above normal hot and cold. It also loses fluid. What did I do wrong? What's the fix? Have I caused damage to the trans? Help! Thanks igw

Did you remove the old seal from the trans body, it up in the hole that the filter neck slide into and normally don't come out when you remove the old filter.

Yes I did. But now that you mention it, there was some uncertainy about the way the filter went back in. Guess I'll do it again. Thanks
