ive read that thats the best way to accelerate quickly in a race. does this damage ur car?

Depends on what RPM you drop it at. Do it at 7K RPMs and your tranny will blow up like Oprah. Most people that do it don't go over 2K and only while at the track.

Abusing the car is never good but 2K won't kill it. Personally, I wouldn't do it but then again, I don't even power brake my car (auto).

Riding the brake and gas at the same time. Basically, mash the brake to the floor and give the car gas until you reach desired RPMs; launch by letting off the brake. Check out maxima.org for maxima info. For basics, howstuffworks.com is pretty good.
