Which of you kits are you afraid of building...

What I would like to know is what kit that you already have are you saving for when you skills "improve". In other words, which of your kits are you afraid of screwing up? Maybe it's a challenging build, a rare kit, an expensive one or any other reason. This is a kit you have every intention of building but for which you have not set a timeline. For me it has to be the 1/43 GT1 by Renaissance. What a gem. It was expensive, and with over 300 parts, challenging, and a beautiful car too. So let's hear from you.

For me?
Most definitely the project where I take an AMT Back to the Future DeLorean, and turn it into a stock, 1982 DeLorean, complete with scratchbuilt frame, engine, opening doors/hood/trunk.

I won't start this one until I am completely confident in my skills, though, especially since the project has a lot of sentimental value to me. I used to own a DeLorean, but it was flooded during Hurricane Isabel :crying: . (I live in coastal Virginia, so everybody around me lost cars too.) This project will be a tribute to the car.

I used to be afraid of my Accurat Miniatures McLaren M8B but I think I'm to the point where I could do it just fine.

The AM M8B is quite similar in terms of building, fitting, final result, to the Fujimi Enthusiast Series kits ( :naughty: ): high level of details, accuracy, but difficult fitting, and result depending of the time and attention given to test fitting and planification... The difference is the white plastic used by AM that makes the work a little more difficult, as it's hard to see exactly what you do on such a kind of transluscent white plastic...
If modeling pleasure is a kind of masochism (and it is! ), I'd rate this kit top of the top!:iceslolan

I'm sure you'll have a nice time with it! It's really worth the money! :sunglasse

My Tamiya 1:12th Williams and Ferrari 190 F1 kits. Worth about $300.00 and with Perfect Parts coming back into production, I'll soon have that much in aftermarket PE and machined bits as well.

As for kit's I DON'T want to ever work on again...Heller/airfix Peugeot 905. Surely molded and cast by Satan himself from the plastic gates of Hades.

Scratchbuilt kit I'm dreading? My 1:24th Allard 2JX. Currently it is located somewhere within a block of 2" X 1' X 1' Renshape.

I'm doing the same thing, been working on it for a few years now. I have the doors cut out, and the interior all but done, and the rear louver cover done, but I still need to

-figure out how to make good looking hinges for the doors
-scratchbuild the frame
-scratchbuild the engine
-scratchbuild front luggage compartment

That stinks about you DeLorean :( I hope to get one after college, a nice 81 with grey interior and 5 speed, that's also what I'm building this one after.

Sort of lagging behind on the Repsol bikes cause there's too much large decals and I want to paint those schemes instead. Don't find my skills matching the criterias for that job.

More problematic is my idea too kitbash a Yamaha R1 with the swing arm from a Ducati 916 making a replica of a great bike I once saw. Problem isn't the bashing but the fact that all cowling parts has to be carbon fibre...... :sly:

I'm with TheSaint111, Tamiya Mclaren MP4/6. I already have the Perfect parts detail set and I just ordered the brake detail set from Racing Miniatures for it. I'm now researching wires for all the computers and different carbon decals for different textures. I've yet to order the Finishers Marlboro red paint but I'll get that soon.

Saint, I guess you've been to Bil's site and got his build notes for his MP4/6, maybe you and I could do a joint build on it, I'll be starting mine in August/September time when the brakes arrive.

For me is the resin kits!!!!
I have several to do buth all ways past to the botton of the pile!
May be the dangerous is the Profil 24 McLaren GTR...
They do to many parts and fragile also!
Resin kits is expencive everiwhere buth think abouth the dollar versus
real(our money in Brazil) Here for you buy a resin kit you need to think 100 times before! In one month the dollar can going up 5-10%
Apart of this the Ferrari 512 s from Heller is another nyghtmare!
100's of rivets and extremely poor fiting!

Yes of course, I visited Bil Attridge's site. His MP 4/6 is the best 1/12 car model I've ever seen, no words can discribe this model. I am happy if my MP 4/6 becomes half as good. The idea about the joint build sounds great...I just ordered some extra parts from mediamixhobby.com (tire stencil, air valve.....) I'll be starting mine in mid to late August when my Perfect Parts order arrived too.

And another thing, I am intrested in some high-res pics from the perfect parts set. Can you send me some pics of all parts?? that would be nice :-) I'll pm you...

Can't really say it scares me that much, but it sure puts the pressure on. What I'm talking about? The AM McLaren M8B that's supposed to get really detailed with scratchbuilt AN-fittings, coolant hoses, oil- and fuel-lines the whole works. It's gonna take me forever to finish it, but it just has to turn out perfect, or I'll go :crying:

I'm not too afraid to try things, but a couple of things I would like to do have me a little worried.

The first is the 1/12 Caterham by Tamiya, Got to get one! The build doesn't worry me, but the missus does! I f she sees how much it costs I'll be off beer for a year.

Secondly I would like to try some military stuff, maybe some Brit' Desert Storm or something. Just coz I was serving back then and kind of miss the life a bit. Again, building doesn't worry me but I am really bothered about weathering, never done it, don't have a clue how to.

I'm not sure that I'm 'afraid' of any of them.
I've got quite a few that demand more time and attention then I want to supply in a large enough quantity to finish them in a reasonable period of time. So, I'll say that they exceed my attention span.

I'm assuming that both you and Willster have the Tamiya Perfect Parts detail pics?

If not I THINK I have an electronic copy of them...I know I do for the Williams and Ferrari.

The kit I don't want to mess up is a 1969 Camaro SS396 Coupe. It's planned to be a replica of of my dad's old car. I already have all the bits and pieces including PE parts and tons of reference material. I'm missing one thing, Le Mans Blue paint. I've purchased many parts that have added up to quite a bit, and can't buy replacements if I mess them up. The car will include opening doors, hood, and trunk. I've done a few things to it already, but don't want to get to far ahead of myself and screw it up.

bvia
06-18-2004, 08:39 PM
Bah! Always remove the shrinkwrap FIRST thing.

1. You can make sure it has all the parts

2. You can play with all the parts.

3. You can cut most of the parts off the sprues.

4. You can bag the decals

5. You can lose the instructions.

6. You can post asking if someone can scan you a copy of the instructions.

7. You can post asking if someone has the part you lost by cutting it off the sprue before you actually need it.

8. Did I mention you can play with it?

;-)>

Bill

p.s. When removing the shrinkwrap, cut a line from each corner to the other corner on the bottom of the box, making an "X". Then remove the top with the shrinkwrap still attached and fold the flaps of the shrinkwrap under and tape thm to the inside of the box. VOILA'! Shrinkwrap still protects the pretty Tamiya/Fujimi/etc artwork and you can get into the box without removing it!

anything that has a model kit 'number' that begins with "EM-".....
the best i've managed so far, is to put together the engine of the lp400.

also, i have an old revell 365 boxer that i can't bring myself to start.
it was cheap but so hard to find.
all i've done to it is remove the mold lines, some flash, and sanded/shaved the two parts for a better fit....

:evillol:

And you thought you were afraid!? What are you feeling now?? :evillol:

...

Seriously, this kit was the 2nd model I made in my life (years ago!)... And I managed to finish it, even if the result can make one laugh.. or cry!

Take your time: the number of parts is not a problem. The only things you really need to take care of are:
1- the doors (bad moldeled, really need scratchbuilding to look right...:disappoin), and
2- the suspension: difficult to have a good sitting of the car. +: I experienced a problem with the "transmission arms" (those pieces that go from the engine to the center of the rear wheels...:icon16: ), And I needed to cut them for about 1-2 mm... ++: the whole thing is very fragile and brakes easily.

Conclusion: this build is a true pleasure from begining to the end! Go on! :iceslolan (:screwy:)

I'm honestly scared to start my Revell Tony Nancy 22JR dragster double kit. I love the way the rail looks, it's so pretty, and I know exactly how I'll build it, but damned if that multi-piece body and that multi-tube frame don't spook me.

There are a number of kits that I have, occasionally have a look at and then put aside for "later"

These include:
Some Gunze 1/24 high tech kits, the Lotus BRM, the E-Type, the Cobra coupe and the Triumph TR3.
Very fearful indeed is the Protar 1/12 MP4/2C in metal.

Fortunately there are lots of other kits in store, I only hope I'll have enough life left to build them.

p.s.: Somebody mentioned the Ferrari 512 (Heller/Union/Protar), you should try it, it's a wonderful kit. There are other classic Heller kits that are really worth the try as is the Union P4, also a Heller tooling.

I am not scared of doing things I never did before, but I know for sure that soldering the 2 halves of my 1:24 Bugatti Type 43 (Auto Replica's 1980's kit) together will cause some excessive sweating.

Iron too cold or too short at object? No adhesion
Iron too hot or too long at object? The body panels will melt (pewter)

I do not want to mess with epoxy. I am an epoxy technician, and I know it will seperate some day from the pewter.

the whole kit will be challenging: For the seats and straps, there is a sheet of leather which needs to be cut and sewn together, but that involves more patience than skill...

I don't want to mess with my dad's model of Bruce Larson's Sentry Oldmobile funny car. He used to travel with him, and shoot nitrous into the blower butterflies when he went to start it, he has had his eyebrows scorched a few times! LOL.

It's his model, but since it's rare, he don't wanna build it.

If anyone lives in or around pennsylvania or knows where south mountain, he's gonna make a run there with his camaro sometime this summer or fall. Bruce is a cool guy, we see him all over the place, and he always goes out of his way to talk to my dad and my mom and I.
