Chilton and Haynes Wrong about EDIS

Just picked up a 1996 Escort LX with a 1.9 Liter High Output for a project car. Has a bad idle and misfire problem and I plan on replacing the PCM and IAC. According to Chilton and Haynes, this unit uses a PCM coupled with a EDIS module and both provide a location of just forward of drivers side front strut tower. The EDIS module is NOT there, just the mounting bracket, and there is not a wiring harness connnector there either.. Any ideas? I double checked the VIN just to make sure that the year and motor type were correct.

Did you ever find them? I'm running into the same issues.

No, it turns out they were wrong.. Apparently some of that particular year model did not have a separte module.. All the electronics were in the ECM module under the dash behind the center console.

Um if theres no coil pack then your car wont run. I think your looking in the wrong spot. If your car has a PCM then why are you throwing it out? (Performance Control Module)
I think you should take another look. I have the same engine and my coil pack is there.

Thanks Rwilkers. That explains why I can't find it. :) Difficult to get to I'll bet and even more fun to find a replacement?
Escort service...We're not talking about coil pack. It's the EDIS module we are looking for.

There is no EDIS module. It just stands for Electronic Distributorless Ignition system. The power control module is under the heater controls at the front of the console. The PCM controls the ignition system. It is sometimes called the EEC (Electronic Engine Control).

Yes the book is wrong. I also have a 96. The book includes the 96 with the older OBD1 Escorts, and thats not right. Starting in 96 Escorts went to Obd2, at that same time they used a ECM with the EDIS built into it. Your 96 is more like the 97 but minus the IMRC output. 96's also have two O2 sensors, and the book only show's one.
Your bad idle and misfire is probly not form the EDIS/ECM. They seem to last longer then the car it's self. And also, your 1.9 motor is'nt really a "High Output" HO motor, the last true 1.9 HO was in 1990. You have just a regular old 88hp 1.9 SEFI motor.
