I just bought a 97 Jetta VR6 and plan on modifying it, I don't know a lot about cars, even less Jettas.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what modifications would suit the car best?
Here's a list of the mods that I have planned for it, I don't want to go all out on them, I just want the car to be a little bit faster, maybe around 200 hp. Feel free to comment on any of the mods that I have in mind for it, especially if you know of something that would work or that would make it faster.
-Cold air intake
-Racing chip
-Headers and performance muffler
-Strut bar
-Sports springs for the suspension
-Iridium spark plugs and spark plug wires.
Any other suggestions?

replace things that are prone to breaking first, like coil pack if it is cracked, see what shape the headgasket is in, etc etc. after you take care of things that are worn, start modding away. there are a ton of CAI's for mk3's, and they are all pretty much the same in terms of HP/TQ gaings. a lot of people use techtonics or giac chips. headers are damn expensive for VR's and give you like 0.001hp. techtonics cat backs are fairly common and sound awesome. other options are jetex, superspring, autotech...i run stock plugs and STI wires (not subaru STI, its a brand).
depending on what you want to spend on hanlding, common is bilstein sport struts w/ H&R race springs, weitec GT or TX kits (the TX has adjustable dampening) or you can get a shine suspension real suspension kit (www.srsvw.com). strut bars are all the same. hope that helps
oh, and i get all my OEM parts from www.germanautoparts.com. they have awesome service and usually ship the same day.

Headers have proven to give almost no gains for the VR6.
Relatively cheap mods for the VR6.
1.Intake. I like the Turn2 CAI
2.Exhaust (techtonics, Remus, Super Sprint, Neuspeed etc)
3.GIAC chips are good
Stage 2.
1.Lightened fly wheel(autotech 10lb, Unorthodoxy 6lb.) New Clutch.
2. Lightened underdrive pullies. (unorthodoxy, turn2, or Neuspeed)
3. Cams are a decent way to get good hp. (Schrick, techtonics, DSR, Kent cams or CAT cams.)
Stage 3.
1. Big Valve head (Matrix, EIP, Turn2 or GSB)
2. Super Charger(AMS, VFengineering, or C2 motorsports)
3. ATP, HPA, EIP, or Kinetics turbo kits. Kinetics just came out with one that sells for only $2200 and gives an honest 245hp to the wheels.
Other things are like motor mounts and tie bars and sway bars or springs, coil overs, sport shocks etc.

That is not true that headers dont give HP gains, one of the best mods for a VR6 is a port and polished engine head with headers and cams. Bro if u put some "good" exhaust on your car you will gain 2 or 3 HP. If I were u I would buy the package off evoms with the GIAC chip, CAI, and exhaust. U will notice a considerable difference with all that on your VR6. Just for starters.

a nice set of plugs and wires will run you about 150 maybe Taylor ignition wires and ngk or bosch platinum 4 (ngks better for imports)
a good exhaust system for the jetta would be either the magna flow, Borla, or ANSA, i am considering the ansa it seems to have the best bang for the buck, and ferrari and lamborghini use them.
A cold air intake will do you good on the vr6, headers wont do much (unless you have 2.0s')
if you want 200 hp. from you're 115 hp stock jetta you may consider getting a turbo, you're not gona get 200 from spark plugs exhaust and cold air intake if you're lucky you'll get about 6 hp from the exhaust system 2-4 from the cold air intake (or maybe nothing) and not to muc from headers all in all maybe 125 if you're lucky. ...now put the turbo in thats a diffrent story
