Le Mans Contest Entry: Mazda 787B

Ok, so I'm sorta waitin' on some final bits before I get the Galaxie done so here's what I've started in the meant time. This project is about a week old, but I wanted to have some progress to show before I posted. I'm using the Scale Motorsport photoetch and Carbon Fiber template set. The set is very nice. It forces me to make some extra detail. I spent today wiring the motor. 12 wires! My eyeballs hurt now, but it was well worth it. I'm about 1/3 done with the motor, did the side with the sparkplugs, some of the top an some of the intake/exhaust side. After that... the gearbox.... each bit takes me about a day. This is going to take forever... Anyway, wanna see? Ok.

Aww man, I really love this car.
I saw the Tamiya kit a couple of months back, but at that moment I didn't have money with me. I returned to the model shop one month or so later (I'm stupid, yes) and the kit was gone.

Well, at least I get to see someone build it! :D Looking great so far man, keep it up!

I'm sure the SMS stuff (and your skills) will make it really good looking, keep us posted of this beauty.

Can't wait to see this kit finsihed, i love the group-c cars, especially the 787B and the C9. Hope this kit is still available when i buy my next kit.

Got the engine mated to the chassis, have been doing some more wiring and photo etch and CF decal and such. The photoetch set rocks, as does the CF templates, though I am having tons of trouble with the CF decals. So don't compliment my CF work, it's terrible. I didn't even smooth the chassis molding to get rid of ejector bin marks before applying the decal. I got in a hurry and now I've ruined it. I just may have to get another one and do it all over again. Oh well. Some more detail needs to go into the engine compartment, some more (hopefully better since it will be more visible) CF and generally more work. The body work is just sitting in place to give the engine bay some context, none of it is painted or glued.

What's that white container with 3-4 braided lines going into it?
I can see those mold lines/circles beneath the CF, but who cares with all the intricate detailing within the engine bay :)
Keep it coming!

In a hurry and don't want to wait for putty to dry? Try using superglue to fill up those pesky visible sink marks on the chassis plate.

Sand the entire surface with 600 grit, then clean it and fill in the "holes" with superglue. Either use some accelerator or breathe on the puddles and once it begins to harden, sand or file the surface down flat. If you wait too long the superglue becomes too hard to get a smooth surface on.

Once it's flat, sand the entire area with 1000 and 1500 and then coat with semi-gloss black and slap on the CF decals!

You can do it in under 10 minutes (less if you use the accelerator).

I feel your pain with the SMS decals. I'm putting them on the Jaguar XJR 9LM at the moment and tore them a couple of times. I may need another set too.

it looks great, enjoy the build don't sweat the small stuff. You'd have to really screw something up bad at this point to make that anything less then fabalous!

675Datsun - I originally thought it to be a reservoir for the radiator, but since it has hoses coming from all over the place, I decided it must be a catch can, where any overflowing fuilds collect (never to come out again), to keep the track dry on race day.

Heres a tip for you, robrex: you may want to cut the SMS templeted decals into smaller ones, and just take extra care to line up the edges. This may prevent the irregular and frustrating tears. On this particular model, the diffuser was a pain and a half to decal, with all the ups and downs to try and work the decal into. It probably would have been much easier, and turned out much better if I had cut each decal for the diffuser (top and bottom) into three pie shaped sections. Its not hard to hide seams, especially in corners.

Thanks for the interest guys, I've not updated or worked on this in a while, the CF decal has had me pretty flustrated (flustered + frustrated) so I had to put it aside. Plus this poseur car contest model has been kicks for building. Great change of pace.

kt100 - Do you need reference or do you need to know how to do it? Well, short answer for both.

Reference is pretty easy to find, a lot easier than JGTC cars. The best single sight I found was this kickass site (http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/787B/index.html#VID) and it has about all the photos I found on all the sites put together. Very good reference pics.

The rotors each have 3 plugs. (4 rotors x 3 plugs = 12 wires, yuck!) Above each rotor is a pair of ignitions sources (capacitors, I assume, perhaps magnetos?) plus two more pairs between the first, second and third, fourth pair of main ignition sourcres. The "main" ones have the blue boot around the wire, and secondary ones have a black boot. I am thinking the secondary ones are used to scavenge a little bit of power out of the unburned fuel at low RPMs (crazy rotory powered machines!). If you look carefully at the pictures, you can tell how they are wired. The main ignition sources spark the lower two plugs on the rotor directly below them, and the secondaries spark the top plug on the rotor to either side of it.

For building the model, I used igniton wire from Detail Master. For the boots on the spark plugs, I used Detail Master coolant hose, which I slipped over the end of the ignition wire and the nub that represents the spark plug on the the engine block. The boots that attach to the ignition source are much larger. What I did there as slip a bit of coolant hose over this end of the ignition wire, then slipped some vinyl tube (like Tamiya includes for brake lines in their motorcylce kits) over the coolant hose, to give it the wide end and to give it that stepped look. I then painted the blue boots blue, and the wires black (my wires are all sorts of colors, I always paint them).

I go through all this slip-this-into-that trouble because I hate having to drill holes in the block, and especially into little round things like the ignition source thingy moldings. I hope this helps. If not, I can make a nice how to with photos in 10 days.

Your 787 is lookin' fine. Nice work ! I was wondering if you, or anyone following this thread may know of a paint color to match the green for this car.

Also is it safe to assume that the 767, 787, and the MX R01 of this livery, all used the same green ? I'm building all three simulataneously :)

I've read in another forum that Tamiya's X4-park green is an exact match to the decals.

Alclad chrome rim, gold/silver mix for teh centers, I glued wheel weights on before paint, and covered them with BMF after paint to replicate the metal tape used to hold them on, added valve stems. Placed the decals according the the reference I could find, and added the blue dots (right side) and red dots (left side) so my little 1:24 pit crew can get them on right. I've not added the Dunlop decals because they will be handled considerably before completion of the model, so they will be lastish. I need to get back on it if it's gonna finish in time.

Cool wheels. Nice details with the dots and balance weights.

For anybody that is interested Tamiya's Park Green which is available in Spray or Acrylic(Jar) is an absolutely perfect match for the decals. I would highly recommend a white base coat if painting the green. If you look at the decals you can see they also have a white base. Even if you use the decals which fit perfectly you will have to touchup around the front brake intakes in the front of the car and the Acrylic is perfect for that. If you like doing decals I would reccomend using them. Also I know Tamiya recommends bright orange but most pics of the car look flourescent orange, does anybody know for sure what's right?

I've actually wondered about the green, thanks for the heads up there. I want to paint the orange and green areas. I plan to decant the TS paints, but in the past I've experienced some orange peel, is there anyway to combat this with decanted TS?

Try thinning the paint a little with laquer thinner and possibly back off on your air pressure a little.

I decanted the orange and sprayed it, but then decidec "Oh, the decals will be easier than painting the green." Just kidding!

ANYONE PLANNING TO BUILD THIS MODEL: PAINT THE GREEN PORTIONS OF THE CAR! IT WILL BE EASIER TO TRANSFER THE SMALL WHITE BACKING OF THE DECAL THAN IT WILL BE TO APPLY ALL OF THE GREEN!

I have also been pretty disappointed with the decals, the green is all slightly out of register, so there is a dark green border on one side of the decal and a white line on the other. And, a lot of the decals don't really fit well, most notably around the front vent areas. Thankfully, Park Green acrylic is an exact match. I wish I had just sprayed the stuff, though. Right now, I am taking a break from my third day of decalling. I will finish up soon, touch up the mistakes, and clear it with a semi-gloss. Then this car will be ready for final assembly and detail! HOORAY!
