i want to know the difference between a 1998 z28 and a 1998 ss. i want the ss but if the motor is the same for both and its not to much of a difference the the z28 for 6 grand less is better

There is only about a 20 hp difference. If I was going to keep it stock, then I would get the SS. Otherwise go with the Z28, the SS really only has a different intake and exhaust and those are usually the first mods anyone ever does to their car.

There isnt as many SS's as there are Z's so if you would ever want to re-sell the car the SS would be worth more. Just something to think about.

Depending on what is ordered an SS is quite a bit different from a Z28... All basic stock SS's from 96-02 have different hoods, wheels, and spoilers. If you option one out it can have performance exhaust, suspension, auburn or torsen posi, hurst shifter if a 6spd, optional R1 racing tires, and oil coolers along with the the hood, wheels, and spoilers.

An SS will always be worth more than the Z28's no matter how many upgrades you put on a Z. Limited production cars always bring the big bucks. Look at the Copo, Berger, and Yenko camaros.

6 grand is a huge difference.. You could have that Z28 running a lot faster and looking better (or exactly the same if you want) as an SS for $6000 bucks!

But the true SS will hold its value quite a bit better, I guess it depends on what you want to do with the car.. Like 94camaro said, if you want to keep a nice stock ride, go with the SS.. If your lookin for somethin to mod the shit out of, go with the Z28

well yeah, it is an appearence package, but I thought that was obvious. They are a little faster though... especially the 2002 SS. Those are bad ass... 345hp!

my friend here has a 2002 35th edition 345hp SS and dynod right with other cars that have just a lid and catback. It is an M6 and I think he had near 330 RWHP with only a couple free mods. We had a few other LS1 cars with a lid and good (not flowmaster) catback dyno within only 2-4RWHP of him. given a 15% loss, the actual HP at the crank would be near 388 (gotta love the LS1!)

those 345HP LS1's were not standard, but a lucky brak for those who got em.

Look it up, all F-bodies w/ the LS6 intake manifold were rated at 310HP, 325HP for the SS/WS6... while the Vette was 350HP. Before that it was 305, 320, and 345 respectively.

Actuallly 345hp came standard on the ss camros with the center mounted exhaust out the back.

you mean the Corvette-style SLP exhaust??? I was unaware this was a factory option, please enlighten me?

Yeah some SS came with dual center mounted exhaust. This was an option in the SS camaro. The ones that came with this exhaust are the ones rated at 345hp. There is some one on this forums that has one but i cant remember who it was. U know how the vette has four tips right. well this one has two but they are rectangular. Its kinda like having the stock z28 tips placed side by side.

What "reason" did they give for the 345HP rating?

If i remeber correctly it was the exhaust. They weren't only different kinds of tip but also different kinds of mufflers. I am not to sure tho, so ill try and find out for sure.

I am pretty siure the Lid was different as well. Just the Lid and Catback was different on the 345 optioned cars.

Technically those werent limited production cars. They were modified by aftermarket companys. For example: Don Yenko Chevrolet (the dealership) took stock Camaros and threw in 427s and did a few other modifications, then sold them. Yes, they were limited, but I dont think you can really call them limited production, as limited production would mean from the factory.

i was also looking into buying a 1998-2002 camaro ss but was trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to buy a z28 of those years and mod it out. i plan on racing the car and was hoping that yall could tell me if there is a mayjor difference or just a small one between the ss and z28.
