I have a 1987 BMW 535is with an automatic transmission that is slipping badly. I can’t afford a rebuild or new transmission, so I’m looking for used. My question is; what transmissions will fit this car? I can get a good 1987 528e transmission from a friend for free, but I don’t know if it will fit. My transmission has the “Select Shift” switch; Sport, Economy, and Manual modes, but I don’t care about that. I will be extremely happy if I can just get this car back on the road, as we love the car.

Can someone please tell me which transmissions from which years and models will fit this car, so I know what to look for?

I greatly appreciate any help,

David G.

I would definetely suggest you go to http://www.ineed1.com/quikmechanic.html.

They offer quick answers to car problems. They helped me out when I couldn't figure out why my car temperature would rise when I come to stop, and be ok when driving. You'd think it would be the other way around, Anyway, I waste more than a $1 a day on junk anyway, so felt I could afford to lose it if anything. It's better than going some of those mechanic who tell you garbage, and charge you big money for nothing, or worse a shady tree mechanic with no real training.

Good Luck,
Chutch

Any Auto Salvage can tell you what year and model will fit your car...They might ask you to look at the tag on the side of the transmission to find out EXACTLY what trans you have...Besides if they sell you a used trans ask if they will stand behind it ..but before you replace it..have the control unit for the trans checked..mine went bad....and it was not the trans...
