weird question

i was working on an 88 camaro today, the guy had a 3:73 ring and pinion with a power-trax posi lock (which is a total piece of shit by the way) i replaced the carrier with one from a 90RS with 28 spline axles and put the spider gears from the 1990 in place of the power trax and used the 90's axles. got it all back together and worked beautifull...until i decided to take it on a 30 mile trip and it started a high pitch wine like driving on a bridge after driving at 65mph for about 20min.
first thought was ring and pinion clearance not right, well the pinion depth is dead on and the clearance is also accurate. i've pretty much narrrowed it down to the carrier bearings which looked and rotated ok when i put it in. then i was reading that the 1990 rear axles require 4pts of fluid compared to the 88 requiring 3.5. can 1/2 a pint make a difference? it only wines under light acceloration and high speeds(had to test it at 100mph  )
the axle bearings never made any nose like this before either so i cant really see that being the problem.
any ideas?

well, id say put in the extra half pint, and retry, but it definatly sounds like a gear whine to me, how did your pinion bearings look? and not to talk down, but you did use a new crush sleeve right? and installed it only once, not tightening, then loosening and tightening again?

well i put in the extra pint of gear oil and it seems to have stopped the whining noise. it looked to me like that extra pint raised the fluid level just enough to keep about 1/2in of the carrier bearings submerged in oil.
i did notice that the carriers are slightly different in design, the 88's being open on both sides and the 90's being closed on one side. but i've checked and re-checked the clearances and all seems to be ok and working.
i have no idea about the crush sleeve, i didn't remove the pinion since the depth was still dead on and i just switched the ring gear to the new carrier. i used the original shims on the carrier and clearance is still correct. so far so good

yea, your crush sleeve is prolly stuck to the head of the hammer.

it's on the pinion shaft

i always read the rearend threads waiting to read what genopsyde's has this time. it always makes me laugh.
as for the topic it was probably just the lack of oil especaly sence you said it stoped when you added it. hopefully you didnt mess up the bearings with not having oil on them. at 100MPH it probably wouldnt take long.

nah i think the bearings were still getting lubrication, just not enough. i looked at both races and double checked the bearings and both were fine. i was just a little pissed since i was bout 3 miles from my exit and the damn thing started making noise. not to mention i dont like working on rear axles. the gear oil stinks and it's just a pain in the ass.

lol, yall laugh, but ive had that happen, some guy does his rear end in the driveway, then brings it into the shop complaining that "somethin aint right" "makes a helluva lot of noise" we open it up and take it apart, and there was a crush sleeve MISSING, he never put one in, didnt know what it was. wound up needing a whole new rear end. but people do reuse them all the time. and it never fails to... well... fail :)
