THIS WAS IN THE TAMPA BAY NEWSPAPER
Will we still be the Country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice??? Think about it . .
All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings. It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break.. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that.
This says it all!
This is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job, didn't he? Read on, please!
IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT.
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we
are offending some individual or their culture.
Since the terrorist attacks on Sept 11,
we have experienced a surge in patriotism
by the majority of Americans.
However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled
when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about
the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.
I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge
against anyone who is seeking a better life
by coming to America.
Our population is almost entirely made up
of descendants of immigrants.
However, there are a few things that those
who have recently come to our country,
and apparently some born here, need to understand.
This idea of America being a multicultural community
has served only to dilute our sovereignty
and our national identity.
As Americans, we have our own culture,
our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle.
This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women
who have sought freedom.
We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic,
Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language.
Therefore, if you wish to become part
of our society, learn the language!
"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women,
on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented.
It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools.
If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world
as your new home, because God is part of our culture.
If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam,
then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.
We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change,
and we really don't care how you did things where you came from.
This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle
Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion
and we Will allow you every opportunity to do so.
But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag,
our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you
take advantage of one other great American freedom,
THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.
If you agree -- pass this along;
if you don't agree -- delete it!
AMEN
I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends
(and enemies) it will also, sooner or later
get back to the complainers, lets all try,
please

I don't live in America, hence I'm free to bitch about it- hell I'm free to bitch about whatever I like, I'll even bitch about America when I'm in America. And I'll speak whatever language I like in America, I'm free to- Land of the free, remember? Too bad I only know how to speak English.

I agree with some of it, namely the part about learning the language. It has nothing to do with backward thinking, racism, etc. If you choose to live in a certain country, make an effort LEARN THE LANGUAGE that is spoken in that country. For efficiency's sake at least. Not to mention the fact that it's simple common courtesy. Why the hell should I have to decipher the gibberish coming out of someone's mouth, simply because they're too lazy to learn the language of the society they chose to live in? Especially since in this day and age, any person, of any nationality, who considers themselves educated, should be fluent in English, as it is the universal language of business and science.

I am not a fan of chain letters :banghead:
I'm married to a first generation immigrant. Her family loves this country. They worked their ass off and they learned the language and celebrate both the traditions of America and China. Anyone who thinks its immigration that causes any strife does not understand what most of them are about.

dont like freedom of religion eh? then i invite you to enjoy that great freedom of being able to leave yourself and go become a citizen of another, more appropriate nation. Like China.
i find it humorous how people are like "were defending the american culture" when im willing to bet that none of the people saying that are native american. fact of the matter is, the american culture is a blend of all the cultures that settle this land. hence, it is ever changing. everyone from the irish, german, french, spanish, jewish, turkish, and all of those east european countries i cant remember, had a part in creating our culture.
yes, our breaks take place over christmas, but remember, it also takes place over hanukah, kwanza, and the winter solstice. several other holidays of several other religions.
the fact that people are upset that other people of other traditions are affecting what appears to be their southern white boy heritage is disturbing.
if your going to demand that people who move here learn the language and the customs, its time for all of us to brush up on our native american tongues and traditions.
dont wanna learn cherokee? then i advise you to stow it, and allow everyone to enjoy their freedom, just like you.

I think people hate the French because they've been our allies for over 100 years. You know the old saying, "when you have friends like this, who needs enemies?" :)
as for the "editorial" sounds like some uneducated redneck dribble, we've not seen an increase in patriotism - we've seen an increase in stupidity, afterall real Americans love freedom, and they love independence.
A real patriot would spit on the patriot act, a real patriot would see the problems with Iraq, and stand up and say something to defend his country's honor against those in Washington who seek to soil it.
Sure, we do love Freedom, and so the Iraqi people are free from Saddam - but how would we have felt if in our revolution, the French came over, and said "we're here to liberate you from the English" and when they were done, they stayed around and bossed everybody around? :)
Is it considered patriotic to support liars?
As for world opinion - hey, I support everybody's right to express their opinions, whether or not they go against my own agenda - of course I don't have to listen to them or give them any thought. I think it just goes to reveal a little more about all those "patriots" and what they think about freedom, liberty, and justice for all, when they wish they could silence all the others.
Merry Christmass, Jolly Chanukah, Crazy Kwanza - hell everybody now (or rather, mostly just the "patriots") view being nice and considerate as a constriction of their rights. No it's just called being nice, we're not a nation of assholes and rednecks.
As for speaking English, I agree. This country is supposed to be a democracy, majority rules (even when in some cases the majority is made up of stupid people) and the majority of us speak ENGLISH. When a few people were complaining about people being upset about Americans acting rude when people spoke spanish, I had to remind them that it's easier for the minority to bend and conform to the majority, rather than have the majority have to speak spanish so a minority can be happy. They combatted that with the fact that the U.S. stole land that would be Mexico's, orver 100 years ago - I then politely reminded them that the Spanish had stolen that land from the natives of this region. That shut them up. :)

I agree with some of it. You really can't say much without offending someone, or having someone file a lawsuit or other things of that sort, because they didn't like what they heard. Yet, isn't that what the 1st amendment is about? The right to say what you wish so long as it isn't slanderous or treasonous speech?

I feel I have the right to post this since I am a first generation American. I was born in eastern Europe at 5 I moved to America. At 5 year olds I went to school not knowing one word of english but by the end of the 1/2 year of school I spoke english.
Come to America learn english it is the spoken language, learn it or go back. English may not be the offical language here it should be but with the PC crap going around it never will be. There is no need to abide by American customs, its your right, but you better follow the laws of this country. I shouldn't be forced to learn another language because of immigrants who refuse to learn their adopted country's language and laws. The majority rules here in America, that is how our government is setup and that is how society is set up. Deal with it.
FYI I am no southern redneck, I am a northern.

Other reasoning would be up to each individual and their beliefs.

This is such an interesting thread, it has appeared in so many boards that the responses always end up in a blood bath.
What I find interesting (and I'm not to say that the original Tampa editor was correct or not is that) is the following statements.
"This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity."
Sovereignty? Hmmm lets see what websters has to say.
Supremacy of authority or rule as exercised by a sovereign or sovereign state. Royal rank, authority, or power. Complete independence and self-government. A territory existing as an independent state.Going further, lets see what webster says about sovereign.
One that exercises supreme, permanent authority, especially in a nation or other governmental unit, as:
A king, queen, or other noble person who serves as chief of state; a ruler or monarch.
A national governing council or committee. A nation that governs territory outside its borders.
A gold coin formerly used in Great Britain.
hmmm I did not know that the US had a king, or Queen or a monarch. Okay lets go further.
"We speak ENGLISH,"
I do not believe there is any reference in the laws that says the official language is English. True, it helps understanding each other in a conversation if only one language was spoken, True the majority speak English and yes the majority rules but what happens in a few years when the largest minority (hispanics) become the majority. What then. Do we start talking in spanish since its the majority of people in the country. hmmmm remember majority rules.
"In God we Trust"
well I guess we have to trust something, since we can't trust anything from the government with all the lies we get from them. I'm all for you practicing and believeing in your religous beliefs, but keep it in your home and churches etc and not in the government. There a thing such as seperation of church and state. The majority of wars throughout history has been for some sort of religous reason, my god is bigger than your god etc, my god says this land belongs to me not you, etc, Once you take the religous aspect out of the equation most will find that there is no reason to fight. Seperation of church and state, but it rarely ever happens now does it.
Everybody in the United States unless you are Native American does not have the right to say squat about immigrants since they are immigrants themselves. Even the settlers from England which were the forefathers of this great nation of ours. They were immigrants. What if the settlers when they came over had met instead of peace greeting Indians were instead met with non indian hating indians that care less for anyone that did not speak their language and had the power to get them off their land. America would sure been different, now would it.
Things that make you go hmmm.
Oh as for the french statements, I agree why is everone so upset with the french, they were right all along about the war, for not going into the war and they stood their ground. Its costing us our troops our money and our patience with no end in sight and yet the Pres still have the balls to say its to protect our country. Bullshit, stay within our borders and protect us from within, use the billions on security and we'll be better off.
Give me a break.

I think it is more correct to say that wars were started for other reasons and that religion was used as a means to motivate the masses. Rather than religion being the cause of the war, it is abused by using it as leverage to get people to go fight, kill and die.

I find your post be be very nice, and a good argument, but i thought i should at that actually the Indians would be immigrants also, since life, supposidly started in the area that is now Iraq, or other parts of the east, what are now called indians come from there, so they did not originate in North America, they crossed land bridges during the ice age or something. So, everybody in in NA is in fact an immigrant(from the discovery channel and 9th grade science).
French fries!
You mean "Freadom Fries"? ;) actually i think they were invented in belguim(spelling? :dunno:?) :smooch:

Hey T4 Primera
Good point, I stand corrected in that aspect. But i still think if they take out the religous part of it it wouldn't be so long and bloody. Or at least fewer wars.
Hey Um...Nameless Dork
Also good point, but if we go that far back then....then... holy cow, that means I'm related to some guy in Iraq named Hassan. :eek7:
Six degrees of seperation I guess.

Now you're confusing fast food with French food. :) Of course now, we'll probably find out that Mc Donald's franchises are actually French colonies.

Good point! Does make one go Hmmm..
Here's one?? :uhoh:
Actions: Would You Comply?
if you break it down, the principles are the same for any culture :2cents:
1--The concept of assimilation, in which people can be easily lead to believe anything.
2--Ideals still make members of a society dependent, and on the search for an authority figure.
3--Able to force large numbers of people to obey directives
4--Considering the dominant personality traits of people, that they could so easily be conformed to one individual’s beliefs
5--Occupational prestige is maintained by higher authorities, which leads to discrimination.
6---Discrimination and power struggles, as well as distorted judgments on those of other cultures, still exist. What these people need is a soul connection, and a way of dissolving their false ideals in order to reach an open mind.

Once again name one battle that the French played a major roll in?
February 6, 1778 - American and French representatives sign two treaties in Paris: a Treaty of Amity and Commerce and a Treaty of Alliance. France now officially recognizes the United States and will soon become the major supplier of military supplies to Washington's army. Both countries pledge to fight until American independence is won, with neither country concluding any truce with Britain without the other's consent, and guarantee each other's possessions in America against all other powers.
June 18, 1778 - Fearing a blockade by French ships, British Gen. Clinton withdraws his troops from Philadelphia and marches across New Jersey toward New York City. Americans then re-occupy Philadelphia.
August 30, 1781 - Count de Grasse's French fleet arrives off Yorktown, Virginia. De Grasse then lands troops near Yorktown, linking with Lafayette's American troops to cut Cornwallis off from any retreat by land
September 5-8, 1781 - Off Yorktown, a major naval battle between the French fleet of de Grasse and the outnumbered British fleet of Adm. Thomas Graves results in a victory for de Grasse. The British fleet retreats to New York for reinforcements, leaving the French fleet in control of the Chesapeake. The French fleet establishes a blockade, cutting Cornwallis off from any retreat by sea. French naval reinforcements then arrive from Newport.
September 28, 1781 - Gen. Washington, with a combined Allied army of 17,000 men, begins the siege of Yorktown. French cannons bombard Gen. Cornwallis and his 9000 men day and night while the Allied lines slowly advance and encircle them. British supplies run dangerously low. cornwallis later surrenders

Obvoiusly, for any culture/community to work the population has to submit to authority or laws... Otherwise, we wouldn't work together for the common good of all. Do you have a better way?

Flatrater, He posted this list because "somebody" stated that the French played no important part in the American Revolutionary War. Well, "somebody" was wrong. Besides, what does it prove? We don't all hate England, we fought them in the revolution, and they bombed our whitehouse in 1810 - and we like them.
The whole "let's hate France, 'cause were American" thing is IMHO just for retarded people.
I've still yet to hear any good reasons for the general dislike of France and the French.

I never said I dislike the French! My attempt with French fires was in humor. Humor is lacking in this forum, too much tension here. I relly dislike no one country, all of them make mistakes. But IMHO I believe the hatred of the French stems from their government's opposition to the Iraq conflict. You see the French were portrayed in a negative way in the America press. I never said its wrong or right to hate the French, I have no like or dislike towards I can say the french people dislike the America people as much as tarnaki dislikes George Bush.

Those who are willing to kiss our ass, we call friends, and those who won't - well to hell with them. :) (even if they've been our allies for over 200 years)

I think when Americans say they "hate" the French it comes more from how we stereotype them. Many Americans think of French people as being arrogant pu$$ys. I'm not saying thats right in any way but its just one of those dumb stereotypes that we have.
Personally, I dont know any French people. But growing up in Florida I've had the displeasure of dealing with lots of Old French Canadian people and I have no problem with telling you how I can't stand them. I've never met a French Canadian that wasn't rude, obnoxious, and unbelievably CHEAP! I know that they aren't from France but maybe that adds to the negative stereotype.

actually a really think its because of the whole "with us or against us" speech that W made. the french werent with us, therefore they are against us, and the american public found it difficult to not believe what they were told, and therefore ran with "french=bad" and all the while forgeting that the french have been our loyal allies since we were a country.
and as for the french being pussies, ill remind people of the french resistance in WW2 and of the french foriegn legion (excepting dien bien phu)

Whats funny is that i watched the History Channel once and they talked about this Concentration Camp that revolted and held out longer then the french in ww2, but alas i was not paying much attention, so i dont know what camp.
The "if your not with us you are agiants us" thing has been miss used, it means that if you harbor terrorists you are againts us, but mainly its just fun to make fun of french dudes. The french foreing legion was not made of french dudes, it was made up of Americans(at least in ww1, before america actually entered the war.) and in ww2 it was natives of the lands they were figting in, and other ppl like Indians(from India).
