A friend of mine has a chevy with a 3.1 and he put a sports muffler on it. Hes had it on for about a year and then about 2 weeks ago he was given a ticket for his exhaust being to loud. Now his exhaust isn't loud at all. Most of the vehicles around here are a lot louder then his especially imports and trucks with loud glasspacks and turbo tubes.
Does this sound right to yall?
Am I next I don't even have mufflers I just have converters?
Why did they pick his car?(Is it the large exhaust tip)
This really sucks and it isn't right!

I'm not sure about where you are, but I know here after 11pm my truck is illegal. I have shortys, h-pipe, 1 chamber flows, and 3 1/2" tips turned out the side. Loud as hell, specially around 5000rpms when I shift. Back to the topic though, could it have been that he was out late raising hell?

answer: cops are assholes and they don't necessarily have to follow the rules. the cop saw a loud car, felt inclined to pull him over for whatever reason. F da police.

I was driving around without any catback, and was pulled over twice and they didn't say anything about it either time. It was pretty F-ing loud and rumbly.

Did they have any way of measuring how loud his exhaust is? I know my state has a set limit, like 75db from 15 yards or something like that(don't know exactly), and if they dont have a dB meter on them, they can't do shit about it, maybe disturbing the peace if it was really late and he was driving like a maniac making a racket.

What has the world come to, if you can't even drive like a maniac really late at night??

It was in mid-day and all they did was listen to it with their own ears. oh well I haven't got the problem. Anyway th e capt. destroyed the ticket because it wasn't loud enough. I should be alright then.

out here in cali its 95db, thats the federal standard or something like that but each state can make a law that is more strict. the good thing is that now out here we can fight the tickets. there are smaog check stations that are now licensed to test the exhaust and see wether its legal or not. the only catch is only people who have been given tickets for loud exhaust can go and have there car sertified. but if you get it sertified to be legal then all you do is go to court with the sertificat and no more ticket. first good thing california has done in a long time.

Man i got a disturbing the peace ticket in my town. They said that my stereo was to loud in my car. It is the factory stereo. He said he heard me from 2 cars behind. It was bullshit cause when the lights came on a commercial was playing.

Let me just say first off that I respect police and admire the work that they do.. but sometimes they are out of line. If they're pullin over people who have their stereos or exhaust "too loud", they need to go pull over some harleys. They are rediculously loud, as in deafening. It physically hurts my ears(and I'm young, I was 15 feet from the stage at a chili peppers concert and THAT was fine.. and the opening bands were Mars Volta and Queens of the Stone Age... they were a bit too loud!). I mean, my house is a good 100ft off the road, which is a hill, and its LOUD when I'm in my room and a Harley comes rippin up the hill. Sorry for ranting, its just pisses me off.. Any ricers or muscle cars I've heard don't come close to the harleys that I hear every day.

I know what you mean. Those freakin harleys are loud and I never see them get pulled over for being too loud.
What really pisses me off was when a friend of mine was getting bitched
at by 2 neighbors becausethey say his exhaust is too loud.(All he has is flowmaster cat back exhaust)They even complain to the police becaue they say his car is disturbing the peace when he leaves early in the morning to go to work. Now the 2 neighbors who report him both have loud vehicles. The one neighbor has a loud ass Harley which he drives home sometimes at 11:30 pm ripping down the street and the other has a Nova with straight pipes with no mufflers and no cats and he also has a loud ass harley.
Now, you tell me what is wrong with this picture.

I am going to purchase some exhaust and was wondering if an h-pipe with glasspacks would be too loud? And what would this be comparable to in sound? (Harley loud, Magnaflow X-Pipe and Cats loud.....) I have an almost stock 289 in my '66.

Yeah it is bull, if the ticket didn't get ripped up I'd have fought it. Sometimes police just pull you over because they needed to show they've been busy and just show a bullshit ticket that really isn't worth anything
