I have a 2000 Audi A4 Quattro. I am looking to up the HP in my A4. What should be my first purchase in doing this? I am on a low budget, but I am willing to spend if I really need to. Also could you list some websites? That would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Chip for the first and exhaust next(for performance)

Thanks guys...do you know of any sites that I can go to, to purchase a chip? Thanks

..GIAC and APR are the two frontrunners...go to their sites and see if there are any dealers near you.. that's the best thing to do.. that way you have access to the dealer if there are any problems down the road or if you want to upgrade the software...so pick whichever's closest [:)]
..otherwise, you'll have to send out your ecu to get chipped...so that would mean no car for a few days.

...dont really pay attention to 0-60 times and what not.. take a look on the manufacturers' sites though maybe...

cold air intake would not be a bad idea, and as for chips and exhaust and a lot of other stuff, check out
www.pes-tuning.com they got a lot of stuff.

..the intakes out there for our cars are a huge rip...they offer no better performance than stock and are grossly overpriced... best bet is to leave stock or attach cone filter to the stock inlet tube. instead of paying $200+ for a filter and a little u-pipe... these intakes are also not cold air... the only way to really get a true cold air intake is to relocate the battery and run the filter into the battery box.... very nice setup.

What will a computer chip modification do to the car? Will it just remove the Governor's set top speed limit? Or changing the timing of firing of the engine. There is also a chip for the tiptronic transmission in the market. Will I need both the engine chip and transmission chip? Mine is a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro Tiptronic Sports Package.

not sure on everything the chip does..but most notably it raises the boost.usually to about 1 bar.. also adjusts fuel, timing, etc..and everything associated to running properly when running higher pressures.

Thanks.
My auto shop guy told me that performance chip may send too many faulty signal to the car's on board computer, leading to more electronic error. He was showing me the handheld device that plug into the car's computer. He told me not to mess with modifying the engine chip. On the other hand, I see a lot of Audi guy doing that. What do you think?

Yes, you are right, marked001, about how the performance chip works. I asked the same question to a guy named Ron Price from PES-Tuning, and here is his answer:
The GIAC ECU Chip for your Audi achieves its 50-55hp gain by raising
the turbos boost pressure from 8 pounds to 16 pounds, plus allowing
increases in timing and fuel delivery. The chip is soldered into your cars ecu replacing the stock chip. The only time a check engine light would
appear is if an engine malfunction had occured, the chip alone will not cause a cel. The tiptronic chip will work in any format with or without an aftermarket ecu chip. Thanks

Just to toss this out...I don't know too much about Audi's, but if you think a chip will raise your hp 50hp, you are grossly misinformed. If the stock boost levels of your turbo could put out 16psi, why in the hell would Audi set the stock settings at 8psi. There is no way a chip would allow a raise of 8psi. If the factory boost setting isn't that high, then chances are your factory fuel system can't handle that high. I have a mitsu, and my factory fuel system can handle 15psi, my stock setting is 12psi...why would Audi leave so much 'free' hp untapped, if their cars could safely achieve it? Chips can be reputable, or they can be cheap resistors that lie to the ECU about ambient temps in the intake and throttle response and such. But even good reputable chips will only mess a tad with the fuel maps and lean out your fuel trims. I don't honestly believe that a chip available will safely double your stock boost settings and raise your hp 50hp. Please take this as just my .02, as I don't have an Audi, but as someone who has done their research on cars...I simply don't accept that at first read.

..there's a very good reason why... the 2.8l v6. v6 cars are more expensive.. if the 1.8t was putting out close to 200hp, people wouldnt want to shell out the extra $$ for the v6..so they detuned it with programming.... very simple.

Do you leave it that way and drive around with the Engine warning light on?
Did you go back to the installer/manufacturer to ask for some kind of warranty? Or return the chip back?
