I also have the '97 993 cab. I've had troubles keeping the two cable driven gearboxes that lift the top to stay in sync with each other.
I've been shopping around for the workshop manuals and a source or two for parts.
Anyone?

it is not that bad. remove the rear trim to axcess the motor and tranny's. tranny's are in the corner just next to each rear seat. remove the cables from the motor and remove the trannies with the cables to make it easier on you. you will see 1 big timing mark on the tranny. line the big mark up with the small mark. do that to both tranny's and they are in time. before you do that you will need to take the tranny cover off to remove the cable. you shoud see a round cover with 3 or 4 screws in it. remove it and you will be able to remove the cable. there will be a small worm gear connected to the end of the cable. some models, the cables are tough to remove from the worm gear so you will have to use a torch (not a big torch, the ones people use for lighting there cigarettes in high wind) to heat it up to remove. you will need needle nose pliers or similar to hold the cable. heat the cable and pull at the same time and in about 10 seconds the locktite will melt and the cable will release. good luck!
