im about to install a new cd player in a 2001 cavalier. i went and bought the factory harness so i could retain my door chimes and such. ok before i tear into the dash, which i hear is quite an undertaking, is it necessary for me to turn off the airbags to prevent them from going off while im working and if so how do i go about that?

thanks.

Well I have installed many car stereo's systems
and I have not heard of anything like that if you go and buy the wire harness for the aftermarket deck
you should be fine
and as far as I know you do not need to run a ignition wire to the fuse box that would be part of the wire harness (the main plug)
I hope this helps you but you mite want to check with some one else.
I have done a 98 cavalier with no problems
please let me know how it goes.

well ive been told that they started adding the door chime to the stereo on the 2001 and up models for some reason. im gonna wire the headunit up sometime this week and hopefully get it installed this weekend. question still exists about the airbags, you guys think its necessary to deactivate them before i rip off the dash and everything or should i be ok if im careful?

Well if that is true I would call the dealership
just to check with them
they will tell you if the airbags are part of the stereo
I dont think so but like I said I would check
please let me know what they

ok i installed the cd player tonight. the dash removal wasnt too bad, but kind of a pain. after i removed the old radio and tried to fit in the new one, i discovered that the aftermarket was maybe a half inch or so longer than the factory radio and would not fit in. there was a little piece of plastic that i decided to remove with a dremel tool and that gave me enough room to fit in the cd player. since i purchased the metra vt-gmrc-01, with the additional door chime, i had to run that into the glove box. i figure ill get it mounted sometime soon, but for now its just haning in there.

thanks for the advice guys. cd player works great.

the mounting kit i bought for my 97 came with a few different brackets, and i used the one that stuck out half an inch and it fit fine. if you use one that's flat then the deck probably won't fit in.

a girl i know had hers installed professionally, and they used a bracket that sticks out a full inch. looks like shit.

oh just wondering if this was the same in all cavalier, but anyways the cd player will remain on after you turn off the ignition. once you open a door though, it promptly shuts off and cant be turned back on. i thought i messed up the wiring until my girlfriend told me that the old radio did the same thing. anyone else run into this? gmc sure knows how to wire up a stereo system let me tell ya...
