smelly Jetta

Our 2002 Jetta stinks! there is a strong urine smell when we turn on the heat or a/c. and we often find white dusty chunks on the front passengers floor that have falling from the dashboard or vents. the chunks smell like mildew. the problems started last year when we had trouble with water. the rear passenger side floor was always sopping wet. it was taken to the VW place and still under warranty, but they claimed that it was not a warranteed problem. they partly blamed the installation of a replacement windshield, and partly blamed us for all the hemlock needles blocking the sun roof drains. but we are still having this problem and the floor is all moldy. the urine smell is pretty recent. the mechanic found mice nesting in the engine's air intake. he cleaned that out, but the smell persists. i have cleaned out the venting intake and replaced that filter. the VW place has tried deoderizing the car. has anyone had similar problems and found a way to solve them?

If you still have the water problem there is really nothing that you can do until you fix it. Once it is fixed I would replace the carpets. As far as smell in the vents, when the ac is used, condensation can build up in the ventilation system. There are some products on the market that can be used to deodorize the ventilation (Try a web search). It helps to flip on the heater for a few mins after extended AC use to dry it up in there. I sprayed Fabreeze into my vents and used the heater trick and it has kept the vent smell down.

First off...how could you have let mice find the time to build a nest in your intake??? :eek: Treat your VW with some love....drive her daily! :p As for the leakage, a similar situation happened to one of my buddies A6's. His car had a line that was leakin from the ac duct and was soaking his floor in the back right seat. So if this sounds familiar, bring your car to the dealer and have them check the ac lines or something. Once the leak is taken care of...the mildew will eventually clear and you can fumegate your car.
