Tahoe cuts off

I changed my fuel pump on my 96 tahoe, but when I put everything back I got a humming sound from my gas tank. I was thinking that the pump was priming or pushing out air. So I took it around the corner and when I did this it cut off, so I stopped and I cranked it up it started right back up and politely cut off again. I was hoping someone had similiar or any problems with their fuel system.
