Door hinge problem on '01 Mirage

I have a 2001 Mirage and the doors have gotten real hard to open and close.
Upon further inspection, I noticed that the lower hinge on the driver's door is in real bad shape.
It got so bad that the door's sheet metal ripped.
I've made an appointment with the local Mitsu dealer. He wants to take a look at it.
The car is just 3 years old with 40,300 miles.

Has anyone else had an issue like this on their Mirage?
How responsive is Mitsubishi Motors to goodwill type repairs?

I really feel like this type of damage is not normal and it should be covered by the company.

Any thoughts?
