seat covers

I bought a set of Katzkin leather seats for a 2000 Jetta. It has a 60/40 rear seat. If anyone has re-covered seats like this, how did you remove the lock/ fold down handle from the seat. I've covered seats before, but getting the handle off this to put the leather on has me stumped. Is this a dealer removeable item only?
