I have a 89 supra with a 7M GTE. Im in the army and currently in Germany. A few months ago I started having problems with my car running hot. I have replaced the thermostat, waterpump and fan clutch. Once I replaced the waterpump and fanclutch my car stoped over heating. However, I still continue to use large amounts of antifreez. Not to mention that the heater does not blow hot air untill after the fan has kicked on. My first thought was that i cracked the head so I checked the oil to see if there was water in it, there was not and to date continues to be none. Based on eveything that I have read my next move would be to replace the head gasket metal of course. I was just wanting to know if any one else had this problem with the heater blowing cold air after the engine is warm. I also need to conferm that I am right or wrong about the head gasket. I guess that the Autobahn can do bad things to a great car. Just incase anyone wants to know my mk3 can top out at 154mph :banghead:

I would tend to dissagree with the head gasket problem. Not sure though, if it was a head gasket, it would be blowing out large amounts of white smoke. If it is doing so, I would smell the smoke, if it's sweet smelling, you have a coolant leak which is bad, if it smells bad, it would be the oil. Wish I could be more help to your overall question but I hope my input helps.

I know its not an oil leak thats the one thing that i dont use. You said to smell the smoke, the car only smokes for about the first five min. and then stops. It only does it when the car has been sitting over night. I couldent notice any smells in the exhaust, however it felt more like steam then exhaust gasses which felt really odd. I tried to burp the cooling system and that did nothing. The funny thing is that there is never coolent under my car. However, when im driving I wil get a strong oder of antifreez that only last for a couple of second and then goes away.

well, i was getting smoke and i found 2 spots where it showed prob.s./ a gasket after my exhaust manifold, and the coolent line into the back of the clock had a VERY small crack around the fastener that wasnt visible, but when i rev'd it pressured the water and it would spray out the back....i still got a lil smoke. but that is most likely the 9 year old gas

Yep,sounds like a head gasket,my '88 never blew white smoke. It just used lots of radiator fliud once or twice a month my indicator lite would come on.I pulled the head gasket and found the #6 cylinder water jacket part of the head gasket bowed out to the cylinder .That showed me the cyliner was taking in water, not alot but enough.Good luck

I just wanted to give an update with my 89 turbo. After a lot of research I came to the conclusion that my car had a BHG. I ordered ARP head studs and a head gasket. As I started to take the head off I noticed that the head bolts were loose. I was going to just retighten the bolts but then decided to go on and take it the rest of the way down and replace the HG just to be safe. I noticed that the previous owner had already replaced a BHG and failed to re-torque the head bolts. The HG looked new with the exception of between the #5 and #6 cylinders which was worn. Now with the new HG on my baby blows hot air on command. And I no longer use coolant or get the occasional smell of coolant.
