I have been browsing through the Alias website looking for some trials of AutoStudio and other 3D modeling programs.
Does anybody use Maya or Maya Personal Learning Edition? Are they good 3D modeling tools for FREE? I just want something to toy with and make 3D models of my concept sketches as well as CG models for my hot rod project.
I have been looking around here for 3D modelers, seems like everyone uses 3Dmax. So any input on Maya would be excellent!
Thanks.

i seem to be in the same boat as you, I do have Maya ultimate 6.0, but havent got a clue on how to use it. I have been told that it has instructional tutorials to walk you through the basics but I have yet to even install the program(no spare time), A couple of people I work with are really into 3d stuff but they use 3dmax as well. If I can find anything ill let you know.

I have been looking at screen shots of the program, looks a bit challenging. I have taught myself other programs though.
AutoCAD just isnt giving me the 3D capability I want.
Thanks for looking for the info, Im looking too.

GTmike, hey,,,, use 3dsmax 5 for modelling and designing, maya is basically for animation its not good for modelling but u can still model in it its just not made for that... its like image ready and photoshop... see the difference?

Turns out Maya wont run on my OS, :crying:
What about Blender? www.blender3d.org (http://www.blender3d.org)
I have been looking through the tutorials an galleries and it looks like a decent program but complicated. I have taught myself many other programs but these 3D modeling programs are scaring me.
Thanks for the feedback.

Hello.
Try PowerShape by Delcam...
...or even SolidWorks.
Maya is the best for car modelling, but 3D Max will do everything you need. Just have a good look at the render machine it has...very powerful and one of the best in any 3d software. (you can also use Brasil for render but it's not necessary...Mental Ray is very, very good)
The problem wit Max for example is the infinite possibilities and tools...but that is common to that kind of products. Try to sign in for some classes.
