Father-In-Law

I just wanted to post this work in progress. Like the title says, it's my father-in-law.

A little history first, be warned it's a sad story-

He passed away in May of 2002, the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. I started this sketch a week ago at my wife's request, she never had a chance to say good-bye to him before he shockingly commited suicide. He was living in Florida at the time, with his current wife and daughter of 16 years. My wife was only 5 at the time of her parent's separation and was only able to see him twice before his death. I never got to meet the man but we briefly talked once on the phone after her and I tied the knot in 1994. When I finish this drawing we'll have it framed and put up in our family room, she feels this to be the best way for her to keep him close to her heart.

I'll try to keep you guys updated on the progress as I get closer to finishing it.

Sorry for asking this, but commited Suicide? Why? I know you wouldn't like to discuss it, but I mam into those kind of things. I know, I am a bit twisted, but I am in and out of Gothic stages right now...

PS, you don't have to if you don't want to...

PSS - No one get me wrong, I do know how emotional this is. I shouldn't even ask why. I just don't feel strongly about many emotions. Unfortunatly death is one I have No fear of...I'm sorry if I come across rude.

What you should try to do, even though it would be hard, is have him standing off to the side right behinjd your wife with his hand on her shoulder or something.

HighOctane- Unfortunately we never knew why he did it. He only left a note to his wife and daughter telling them he loved them but it was hard for him to go on. What exactly he meant? We don't know. He hadn't been a part of my wife's upbringing, he left when she was barely 5.

Strt1189- That's a good suggestion, except my wife doesn't want that. She'd prefer just a portrait of him alone.

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate the input.

Wow commiting suicide is such a strong thing to do. Very nice job with the portrait of him. May he Rest In Peace. I had a friend get stabbed during his party not to long ago, very sad things.

Yeah, I know how you feel. My dad passed away recently too...

As for the drawing, it looks great! there's alot of contrast which is very good. I suggest that you use a tortillon for the dark portions of his hair and work on the ears, they look kind of plainish.

Thanks again for the comments, I have a new set of tortillons (or "paper cone thingys" like my wife says) and I will be fixing many details. This is just what I got done in about 2 hours this past Saturday. It's a challenge to work from such small pictures enlarged and printed from a PC. He didn't take many pictures throughout his life and his widow pretty much has the only original 8 x 10.

I've never really been a portrait art kinda guy, I'm more into cars so this adds to the challenge. The only good thing is that I'm good at copying what I see on to paper.
