The So Cal Impreza Club forum I read sometimes was trying to get a huge group buy together on somekind of CB radios that had around a 20 mile range, so they could all just chat all day. Sounded like a neat idea, but it's like a $150 - 200 initial investment, right?

Regular CB's are limited to 3 watts broadcasting power, although some people can up the power.
The best CB's are the 'sidebands' They have 80 additional channels as well as the 40 regular ones. They have a 30 mile range or more on sideband.

yeah they work...the one i got has 1000 channels and i can hear police, fire, rescue, military, planes, boats, and city workers, and ham radio operators. basically if they use a radio, i can hear them.

i have a decent little setup in my 1998 monte carlo(yea i know...)
im using a hustler brand antenna with the radioshack rippoff of the Cobra29. one of the first things i did so my voice can be heard out there with those "big boys" is take it down to a local CB shop and get it "turned up"
i can send a signal out almost 10 miles (depending on the skies and if i skip pretty good) i can recieve about 5-6 miles (once again depending on the skies and if i bounce the atmo.)
i dont think i spent more that 100$ on my whole setup and i think i reach out pretty good

It doesn't matter if they can transmit or not it is illegal in all 50 states if you have it in a vehicle.

I was just looking at some laws and mobile scanners are actually legal in many states.

Mobile scanners yes, but they cannot have police, fire, or ems frequencies in them if they are in a vehicle. It is an FCC regulation. I am a medic and obviously we carry radios for work. We have to get a permit with the FCC for our radios.
korndogg
06-16-2004, 12:09 PM
did you look at that site though....it says wisconsin residents dont need a permit. Its not like its a big deal though. im not gonna use it for illegal things so im not gonna worry about it! :)

yeah i kno what you mean...thanks for the info though! I looked at consumer reports on the scanner and they said the only bad part about it is that it is really hard to program.
