Transmission Problems!

I am driving a auto 96 grand am gt, and out of the blue the car is having major problems shifting up. Is this a common problem among the grand am's? I have not had a chance to take it to a mechanic yet, but does it sound like this transmission is toast?

notorious for bad clutches..... heat and racing .....basic wear and tear really..... you got an auto or manual?

It goes from reverse to drive, and 1st gear to 2nd gear just fine, but it just really does not want to go to 3rd gear.

93, auto.
a month ago, park to reverse to drive, no problem. wouldn't shift out of 1st, needed a new transmission.
