Hi. I'm looking into buying a 1996 Cavalier with a 2.2 litre engine and 5-speed transmission. it has a 169,000 miles on it and my question is how good are these engines and tranny's? do they have many known problems? thank you!

no dont buy it, youll have alot of problems with the engine blowing a head gasket needing to be replaced. Also u wont have that much fun with that engine. its only 115MPH and a 3spd tranny.

Jayson is a little right and a little wrong. The engines are very solid IF you get rid of the dexcool (red) coolant. The red coolant in late model GM cars will gel if you ever run it low. This builds pressure and blows head gaskets. If you remove the radiator cap and its green you are okay. If it is red/orange but you see no "mud", then you can go ahead, but do a good flush on the coolant system including the overflow tank and hose. Then refill with the older green coolant. I have a 1989 2.0 (same block) 300,000 miles and a 94 2.2 with 175,000. No real problems. The 94 drives very nice and very strong. The 1989 is showing its age but still does not burn any oil and actually runs very well. My Petersons book shows 140 hp. A little high on the RPM's though. True HP is closer to 120. But it is more than enough especially with a 5 speed. Good Luck with whatever you buy.
