Is it fair to compare.....?

Ok, I have a question that has come up from another thread and I want to post it here to get everyone's opinion.

Is it fair to compare stock supercars,to supercars that have aftermarket upgrades?

In other words is it fair to compare a new Lotus Exige with a Hennessey Venom 1000? Other than the horsepower difference, can vehicles that are bought from the manufacturer be compared to vehicles that have post manufacturer upgrades?

Fairness?? I'm not sure, but silly? Yes- Modification has it's boundaries, but most people have not pushed them yet...

Ok cause what I keep hearing people talk about cars like the Carrera GT and then someone will eventually say something like, "Yeah, but the Venom 1000 will smoke it!" To me this is a little silly as you say, because an aftermarket vehichle cannot be compared on equal setting with a stock vehicle. Now you take a Venom 1000 and compare it to a Carrera GT after Hennessey Motorsports gets done with it and then we can discuss things a little better. But, even then we would only really be discussing the particular upgrade packages instead of the actual car. In my opinion if we are going to compare cars (not the mods) we must look at them as they were designed.

yes, like jimster said, it is silly. it seems that people have to go to mods when the car they are rooting for is loosing. i admit it, i have probably done it a couple times, everybody has.

Sometimes it is fair to make those comparisons...like for instance...

The SVT Cobra (the supercharged one) could be compared to some Roush, Saleen, Kenne Bell tuner cars. Why...they both have superchargers and are essentially Mustang GT's modified...

Or

The Mazdaspeed Miata could be compared to some Flyin Miata, Racing Beat or Jackson Racing Miata's...
Or

The STi vs. the Vishnu WRX, ESX WRX...etc...

Right ok, this is my point. When you compare an SVT Cobra with a Roush, or Saleen Mustang you really aren't comparing the mustang you are really comparing the aftermarket modifications. But to compare an SVT Cobra to a Z-28 with no special modifications is unfair. Therefore comparing a Venom 1000 to any stock supercar is an unfair comparison in that the original designs aren't being compared but instead the modification of one and the original design of another are being compared. Ok, I think I've confused myself.

I think you are saying you cant compare across brands....ie ur example of the SVT vs. Z28...I mean a more approriate comparsion would be the SS Camaro...although it was no where near as fast as the current SVT...it was the closest

I think we could compare the SVT Cobra to the ZL1 Camaro, in that they are both aftermarket modifications of the original designs. But we must be clear in stating that we are comparing vehicles with aftermarket mods. I just hate it when someone thinks they've trumped a car like the Lotus Exige with a Venom or Lingenfelter. I don't mind a good even debate on vehicles but once somebody tries this don't they in essence agree that the car they like is inferior, and thus needs heavy modifications in order to be equal? Wonder what happens when the other car gets modified?
