Checking tranny fluid?

I was wondering how I can check/add more oil to my tranny if it needs it. My tranny makes a whinny noise when down shifting and crusing at like 10mph. So I was thinking maybe its just low on oil. So how to I go about changing it? I was wanting to drain it to see if I have any metal shavings or anything in it.
