Dear BMW 5 series forum:
One of these days, (soon), I am considering changing out my 17 inch wheels to the 18i inch wider wheels, and I just wonder if anyone here know if that can be done without any suspension modifications changes to my 2004 530i?
Also do you know of any 5 series that has done this type if wheel size change before on a five series, and if so how did it turn out, and were they happy they done it? Yes! or :nono:
Your answer (s) will be greatly appreciated. :)
Thanks,
Presley348 :smokin:

There shouldn't be any modification required when just switching from a 17in to 18in rims.
BMW use 245/40-18 tires for the 530i sport package.

I am a complete dunce not only on BMW but automotive in general. What are the pros and cons of larger wheels?

I currently have a 530i and i was going to get the 525i but the wheels just didnt do it for me. Anyhow, recently i saw a Black on Black 530i with Spinners! lol. Ironically, it was amazing looking. If you have some money to throw around, get em in 19's and pimp away.

BMW-dunce--
APPEAL OF LARGER WHEELS:
more aggressive appearance
shorter sidewalls resulting in sharper handling and quicker response
typically allow wider tires, resulting in better grip
DISADVANTAGES OF LARGER WHEELS:
harsher ride, because shorter sidewalls can't absorb impacts as well
more easily damaged wheels (and suspension)--(shorter sidewalls again)
Presley 348, I've seen 18" wheels on E39 ('97-'03) 5-Series and even on E34 5-Series [there's a beautiful black E34 near where I live with 18" M Parallel Spoke wheels from the '99 740 Sport package].
Since the 530 is designed to have 18's with the Sport package, I can't imagine what problems there would be besides those you yourself mentioned in another thread--I believe they had to do with premature tire wear, etc.

Thanks for your answer. Yea the only other thing I heard from owner was premature tire wear, (10,000 to 15,000miles), and I cannot be buying new tires that often.:banghead:

Today at work a 03 530i came in with 20's and they looked surprizingly small from a distance. I dont belive there were any suspension mods done to it so you can go pretty high in the Inches and still have a stock car w/ no modifications.

Thanks for your information about the 18inch wheels/tires. The only other thing I heard from another BMW owner was premature tire wear, (10,000 to 15,000miles), and I cannot be buying new tires that often.:banghead:
You know, the harsh ride might get to me, but I think I might adapt, to it over time. But what is holding me back is the premature tire wear that I hear other Bimmer owners complaining about!
If the 18in or 19in would wear like the 17in I would have to purchase me a set! :grinno:
Sincerely,

Thanks for the info, do you have a BMW with 18 or 19inch tires"
If so, what BMW model with what options and do you have the problem with premature tire wear 10,000 to 15,000miles?
