needed "ford" knowledge on engine swap

Good day all

Have a question for all you mustang gear heads out there

I have a 87 Ford Mustang that has one dead cylinder. It runs but pretty crappy, Lost all the conpression on number 2.... Uh well

I can get a 87 Lincolin Contential with a 5.0L and tranny complete.

Could someone tell me if the engine from the Lincolin will fit in the mustang or is there "short block"," Long Block " difference that I have to look out for.

Are there any differences in 5.0 Liter blocks or is there somthing that I have to look out for when pretting for the swap?

Will I have to pull the rearend as well or will the origional rear end work with the new 8 cylinder?

any information would be helpful, thanks in advance

It probably is the same block. Not internals though. I blieve the 4-bangers came with a 7.5 rear, so get a new one.

unless you wanna do a carb'd swap, you'll have to change the engine wiring harness and computer. you will need a rear end out of a 5.0 mustang or capri. you also need a driveshaft that will fit the trans and be the right lenghth, and your stock one will not work.

you need a full exhaust system and a good trans, plus the correct trans crossmember. the trans wiring needs to be correct as well, weather it be auto or manual. also need the correct shifter and boot/bezel.

make sure hte motor you get runs, or just take it down to the shortblock, regrind the valves, and put new gaskets in it. the motor mounts need to be right as well. you may also have to make changes to the AC system to make it work.

and don't forget the other suspension changes like V8 spindles, brakes, springs, struts, and shocks.

hope that's all you need, you're in for a lot of work.

by the way i'm in the same boat, have a 2.3 mustang apart in my garage getting it ready for a 351 swap.

Usually the big cars didn't have a 5.0 HO in them, if it isn't HO then it doesn't have a roller cam, and will need a conversion kit and roller lifters to work with an HO cam. Also, the firing order is different between an HO and a standard 5.0. Standard is the old 289 firing order, HO is the 351W firing order. That engine isn't really that desirable for high-performance use...

Also, it doesn't use mass air, so when you set about modifying things, it confuses the computer some...

The lincoln rear end will be wider than yours.

Would the stock 2.3 liter transmission work? Or should i go with one that came out of a 5.0?

2.3 trans will not work. it's geared far too high for v8 power, it's meant to make 85 horse faster. also, the input shaft is longer, and the pilot bushing is smaller. won't work. get a good 5.0 piece.

If I'm not mistaken, the T-5 used in the 4 cylinder Mustang had a lower torque rating than the one used in the 5.0.
