A Bonneville like that isn't a muscle car.

All of the cars are good. I don't know how you would decide how one is "best"...

The shelby 1967 Gt500 427 is the best muscle car in my opinion. But i also love Australia's own muscle car 1971 Ford Falcon GT-HO with 351 HO engine, truely one of the best.

i think if your looking at the car that defined what muscles cars were trying to achieve would be the roadrunner... probably 69. this car was extremely cheap, and had no options, but ran like hell.

The great thing is that there is no "best" muscle car, so we can all have our favorites.

Well, the "gand daddy" is the '64 GTO. It was, afterall, the FIRST muscle car. It must be pointed out, all this talk of Camaros, Cougars, 'vettes, etc. is extraneous. NONE of these are muscle cars. A muscle car is an intermediate body with a "big car" engine. Chevelle SS, Road Runner, Charger, GTX, GTO, 442, Grand Sport, Fairlane GT, Torino Cobra, Mercury Cyclone, are ALL muscle cars.
If you ever drove a '65 TriPower GTO, you wouldn't have to ask what the BEST one is... Perhaps not the absolute fastest (in 1/4 mile), but best balance between a driver and a racer, and gorgeous to boot!

Best muscle car could be the '64 goat, but the '73 Trans Am SD-455 was one sweet car. Besides, you couldn't get a screamin' chicken on the goat.

You mean you couldn't get the chicken decal? That doesn't make you go fast. The 455 you could get in a goat is what makes you go fast...

GTO had a 455 option? sweet. i thought its biggest option was a 427.

A 427 in a GM is a Chevy motor, not a Pontiac. Starting in 1970 you could get a GTO from the factory with a 455 in it.

Yup, and '70 was the ONLY year it had "high" compression. But in all the tests AND street racing experience, in relatively stock form, a 400 Ram Air car would stomp a 455 car. Once heavily modified, the 455 can hang, and even outrun the 400. Prior to '70, 400 was the largest factory-installed engine. There were some dealer-modified 421 and 428 cars. REAL FAST! For the most part, it took a 454 Chevelle to catch my 400 GTO. A 396 car wouldn't do it.

Honestly, I've always preferred the 1969 and previous GM's to the 1970's. Yes, the 454 Chevelles and the 455 Buicks/Oldsmobiles/Pontiacs were wild and hairy, but there's a lot of class in the 396 Chevelles, 389 GTO's, and 400 Olds.

1966 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 with the W-30 package. There's an under-rated and really nice looking muscle car. The 1966 GTO's are very pretty, too. My cousin Barry had a Marina Blue '66 with tri-power and the four-speed that was being restored. The shop it was in burned to the ground. :sadwavey:

The 1964 GTO being the first muscle car is debatable. The 1955 Chrysler 300 was not really a muscle car, but the 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421SD fits the description well. I'll mention an odd muscle car, that being the 1966-70 Oldsmobile Toronado. Some say it's not a muscle car because it's FWD, but, hey, that motor is not sideways like in almost all FWD cars today. The 1971 Toronado was an ugly luxury car, and with all the cutdowns on motor power it was hard to call anything a muscle car by 1973.
