I failed inspection because of a hole in my stock s13 muffler. The Nissan Dealer wants $400 for the one piece pipe from the cat-back. And I can't find just the muffler anywhere, unless i went to the junkyard with a hacksaw (which they wont allow). I have about 75% of my funds saved for an SR right now so it just feels totally stupid to spend that much for a new stock exhaust. Should I just get an aftermarket muffler and weld it on? Or go for a 3" all the way down....I'm so stumped. Every option I have ends up with me having to spend a shitload of money for a dumb ass reason. The hole is like the size of a golfball and they wont give me a sticker...bitches! Any ideas are appreciated.

My hole is the size of several golf balls and rapidly growing. I think it's about 6 inches by 4 inches right now.
I wonder if you could get some guy at a muffler shop to do a half assed repair job on your smaller hole, weld a patch on or something for a few bucks. When my hole was really small I was able to weld some metal on it to cover it up, I think that lasted about a month maybe. =)
If you do that, try to make it a clean even weld, take it to a different place for a smog and hope he doesn't see it's been patched.

well if your getting an SR20 A three inch all the way back is going to be needed sometime soon. unless you plan on dumping out of the downpipe which given the level of bitchosity of the inspector isnt going to go over well either. but if you dont wanna spend the money you might wanna go up to a local car meet/show/race and talk to some of the guys about a sticker. i know most car guys down here here have "ways" :evillol: of aquiring stickers for about 15 bucks. *captain planet sheds single tear*
dont they make bondo for mufflers anyway? just slather some of that crap all up in thurr... mmm... thurr haha

SR isn't going to pass anyways unless you use like 3 cats. I'm so glad we don't have inspection here.

word. I hear that we used to but don't anymore. Just put what you want on the exhaust and tell the inspector to fuck off.lol What is the problem with patching? Visual. Sorry to sound ignorant, but why is that a problem? It has no bearing if it is past the cat, and if it isn't then keeping the exhaust from seeping out before the cat is a good thing. The kits are for sale you know, so if they are illegal, then the cops are missing out on every auto parts store.

I'm going to patch it and tell him to go to hell if he doesnt like it. One of the biggest problems with inspections here in MA are there isn't really a good standard they all follow, alot of the "rules" are opinionated. For instance, at one shop I was denied a sticker because i had aftermarket taillights in my old car, but passed everything else fine...I then took it to another shop and they didnt say a thing about the tail-lights, but said my tires were too bald, something the first shop hadn't even noticed. It's annoying...but I'm just gonna patch it and if he doesn't like it I'll find a shop that does. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, ill keep you posted.

Here in Ontario a couple bucks in the guys pocket and you could get a sticker for a tank. I think people are taking the laws less seriously now, when they first came out I found it was stricter but now they let a lot of things slide up here.

Dude, why don't you just get an aftermarket muffler??? You can get a nice stainless steel muffler that will never rust for about $50. It's better than just patching the hole on your stock 11+ year old muffler. Plus it'll look better and probably sound better.

Because I plan on doing a 3" cat-back with a nicer muffler in the near future. If I get a cheap muffler then i have to pay for it, shipping, get an adapter for the inlet, and then weld it on, which is way more work than patching it. If I get a nice muffler now, I still have to weld it which will mess it up for later on, and if I get the whole cat-back system now, I have to wait on my motor. I've decided to just patch it for the sticker and see how it goes.

ok this is how u pass emissions. On various on ramps to the highway there will be white vans. These vans monitor your emissions as you drive by. When you see one of these vans you turn the car off and coast by it. This is how alot of my friends have done it and i plan on doing it to pass emissions this month. By the way i live in missouri so maybe thats just a missouri thing i dont know.
and i just realized you were talking about visiual inspection im a dumbass and to lazy to delete.
