About a month ago changed fuel pump, and fuel filter. Great! worked perfect. The other morning went to start the truck and it wouldn't start. Changed the fuel pump relay, but still no luck.Dumped some gas into the fuel throat body, and it started up but died after diminished. Please don't tell me that i have to change that fuel pump again. Bought it at Pep Boys. Was a General brand pump made in the usa. Is there any sensors that i may have on my 97 gmc 5.7L, that will disable the circuit?Other ideas, before i crawl under this thing and bang my head up again.

Aftermarket pumps are KNOWN for being not as user friendly as OEM, but as far as your head banging.............

We raise the beds off the trucks that we change pumps in (and that's quite a few). It is much easier to take out the 8 bolts and a ground wire, a couple screws at the filler neck , get two or three buddies and lift the bed off. - We end up doing a complete pump swap in under 1/2 hour most times, unless of course you've got some super heavy tool boxes or ladder rack, etc. in which case dropping the tank is the quicker option.

Hope this helps.

Before you get all horned up about changing the pump again, do a pressure test on the system to see that it is building and maintaining pressures.

If it is indeed building pressure, and holding it, and the relay kicks the pump out as it should, attack the ignition module with a fury known only to those who have hit their head far too many times while changing a pump.

if you have pressure, have a buddy crank it, and see if the injectors are spraying fuel into the intake, if not, module is not sending a reference signal back to the ECM to trigger the injectors.

Other than that, I am totally inept. yeah, thats it

good luck, keep us posted

Do you hear the pump run for a few seconds after you turn the key on?
If not, try putting 12v to the red jumper right behind the relay box under the brake cylinder. The red one (there are two jumpers down there)
This totally bypasses the relay and other circuits. It goes directly to the pump and it should run.

A friend recently had his fuel pump replaced twice in three months, then if failed again on a trailer camping trip in the middle of nowhere.
We trouble shot it down to a corroded and burned contact pin where the wiring pluge onto the pump.
I've since read that GM had a lot of trouble with the plugs throughout the trucks and did some changing in design.

If you have a bad plug sometimes wiggling the wire will do a very temporary fix. Also if you look into the plug it should be obvious.

I had this same trouble with my '01, I finally found a spread spade connector in the plug for the fuel pump on top of the tank. This happens when the plug is pulled & a test light is jammed down in there. All you need is some patients, a light, a small pick and long arms.... Good luck.
