Keyless remote receiver

I bought a replacement keyless remote for my '96 Lumina APV, and in order to program it I have to push a reset button on the remote receiver. The closest shop manual I have is for the '95, and it shows the receiver located against the right sidewall, accessible by removing the right under-dash panel and glove box. However, there's no receiver there...nothing but a relay inset into a small square hole in the wall. Can someone tell me where this receiver has been moved to in the '96? Thanks...

Got the same problem, did you fix that?

The instructions I have say the receiver's behind the glovebox. I removed the glovebox, and see some hardware back there, but don't see the "Program" switch (or any switch, really...). The instructions say it's located "on the Keyless Entry above the connector", if that helps anyone. If you find it, can you be kind enough to return and post a little more solid clue? Thanks...

Obviously the arrangement of parts in that area changed between the '95 and '96 models. I suspect the receiver has been moved about six inches lower, which would put it behind the little triangular plastic panel at the lower corner of the doorframe.

Now the problem is to get that blasted panel out without wrecking it. The bottom end is easy: it just has the sillplate lapping over it. But at the bottom front it has a fastener recessed almost an inch below the surface, and the top of the fastener is nothing but a round head...I can't see any way to attach a tool to it. I suppose it's one of those toothed fasteners that just pull out with enough force, but I can't get a grip on it.

Hmmm, maybe the trick is to drill it out and then replace it...time for a trip to the parts store.

My '98 Cavalier's reciever was in the trunk, under the interior panel on the left(drivers) side. Maybe?

I finally got it working. The instructions I got from two separate sources turned out to be correct, but the location of that "Program" switch is apparently a state secret. I figured the reason the dealership sold me the remote without programming directions was because they wanted to charge me another $40 to program it, so I went looking on the internet to save a little money. After driving around for over a week with the glove box sitting on the back seat, I decided to go to the dealer and convince him that the programming should be included in the purchase price. Turns out, he didn't need much convincing, and seemed happy to do it. Only problem is, they wouldn't let me watch.

I had a working remote to begin with, and just wanted to program a spare, so I knew the receiver was there somewhere. The technician pointed to the gaping hole where my glove box used to be when he got into the car, and asked, "What's that?" I told him I'd gotten some instructions on the internet that said I needed to press the "Program" key while the key is in the "On" position, but I didn't see any button After the technician drove my car to some inaccessible corner of the shop and did the programming, I asked him what he needed to do.

"Just like you said - push the button..."

"WHERE'S THE BUTTON?" I asked, but he just said "Okay, thank you, car is parked over there" and hurried back into the service bays...

Fricking jerk, I thought, but on the other hand, he hadn't charged me...

So anyway, just KNOWING it's there, rather than suspecting I'd gotten some bad instructions, I sat in the parking lot trying one more time to find the damn button.

I had a working remote, and discovered that pushing the buttons on the remote sometimes caused a clicking sound to come from the glovebox hole. Listening closer, I narrowed it down to a bundle of wires that ran up to just under the dash, right behind where the glovebox door used to be. These wires fan out into a connector (blue on my car). If you put the index finger from your right hand on one side of this connector, and the index finger from your left hand on the other side, the left hand should be able to feel the button. It's a tiny black thing, with a black circle of plastic around it, and pushing it means moving your finger toward the back of the car.

Put the key in the "On" position. Push the button. The doors will lock and unlock to indicate that you're in programming mode. You then have 10 seconds to press any button on the remote to program that remote. The doors will lock and unlock again to tell you the remote's programmed. At this point, you can program an additional remote by pressing any button on the remote within 10 seconds, and repeat for up to 4 remotes.

Good luck to all...

Are you able to program the lights to flash, or the horn to honk? I would like some indicatior that my doors have actually locked. My friend has a subarban, and the same remote as me with a 2001 lumina sedan, minus the trunk release, and when he pushes lock, the doors lock, and if he pushes it again, the horn honks. Indicating the doors have been locked, any way to program mine to do that? Thank you.

That's like the scam they got where you have to have your radio unlocked after a battery power loss, usually $50. I got the proceedure from a dealer parts dept guy, under peanalty of death. LOL! I see some here have hacked it too.
