wiring harness problem

I got myself in over my head. To make a long story short, my battery cables were shot so I ended up replacing the cables, which also involved wiring to the starter, A.C., and other items I couldn't tell what they are. I was careful ( I thought ) to connect all wires to the proper spot. Incidentally, I removed the starter motor for easier access and it went back on without a problem,
When I went to jumpstart the truck, the moment that I completed the circuit, the truck started to make a terrible noise. This without the key in the ignition. If I had to describe it, I'd say the engine sounded like it was running backwards, if that makes any sense. I'm really at a loss as to what is happening. Obviously my mechanic skills are somewhat limited.
I hate the idea of turning what was probably a 10 dollar problem into a several hundred dollar problem and I'd really appreciate any suggestions on where to check for crossed wires, or???

well, did you your old battery cables burn up?

No, but they're was some smoke at the terminals.
After asking around a bit, I think the noise may be the bendix on the starter motor. Or the small wire that would connect the cylinoid to the wiring harness. But as I think about it, would that cause smoke at the terminals?

Think you shorted out the system. Recheck all your wiring to make sure you dont cause more damage.
Smoke is definately not a good sign.
Go to rangerstation.com they might have a wire diagram you can double check with to be on the safe side.

Actually its really more spark than smoke. I don't think I shorted it out.
Earlier today I pulled the starter on the premise that the cylinoid was possibly stuck open. I had it tested and it made a hell of a racket- the exact noise that the truck was making. Guy said it sounded like the bushings are bad. Put a new starter in, tried it again, and had the same problem. Starter is "whirring" as soon as the battery is hooked up without the key being in the ignition, ony much quieter now.
So... could it be that the "skinny" wire that hooks to the cylinoid from the wiring harness is defective?
