Insuring a Modified Car

I figured this would be the best place to figure out what people with modified cars do for insurance...
I've heard that if your insurance company finds out you've done some modifications to a car (IE. Turbo on an Integra; hell, i've heard they get pissed over body kits) they'll bump up your rates or drop you. Is this true? And what do those of you, preferably with turbo's or a highly modified car, do? Also, how would they find out you've modified it short of coming and looking at your car?

get it appraised, then they insure it for what it's worth.
your rates will go up, but so will the amount they'll cover

buy the car, get it appraised, then fix it up, show them reciepts, to get coverage, or just forge them if you get fucked up

And roughly how much is coverage? We'll say it's on a '98 Integra LS worth 6 grand before being modded.

Don't, not worth it. What most of the people do here is tel them they have base model and no mods, that way they get insurance for rel cheap...best part is they dont look at the car...and there are a lot of crooked dealerships that can get papers showing a 1987 RX-7 as a gl or glx

i just don't bother telling them anything. of course, i haven't done a whole hell of a lot to my car and don't plan on doing too much exterior work, so as long as i keep my head out of my ass and don't wreck my car, i should be OK

Worse come to worse, they can't really do anything about it if you do get into an accident, they just wont cover the damages and then your going to have a hard time finding another insurance company that will insure ya

I know a chic who got her knee fucked up while ridign with a guy in a modded celica. what does this have to do with anything? when the guy crashed the celica, the company barely gave him the base value of the car, much less the 5 grand in mods he had filed (body kit, NICE paintjob, engine shit). I sure as hell dont plan on filing shit when i get my crx.

you should go through 21 century insurance where they cover the car, not the driver. thats what i do, my car w/ full coverage cost $43 a month

a lot of insurers in my area (Indiana) are now trying to drop people if they do stuff as minor as a body kit or lower the car. its really getting to be a problem.

Yea, some companies just drop it as soon as you do any modification....even certain types of painting :screwy:

I've got allstate. Insurance is like $1 grand a year for liability only on a Taurus. A friend of mine pays $175 a month for an 89 ranger that's worth $1,300. 21st Century insurance does sound good though....Do they still look for mods though?
