hi, im new here and im glad to be here, heres my situation, My friend sold me a 1994 cherokee, 4.0 str 6, has a tilt steering wheel, the jeep needs some work, but runs real strong.
My friend broke his key off in the lock cylinder, when the ignition is turned over to start, it starts but the key does NOT retract and it keeps the starter bendix engaged, you have to manually turn the key lock cylinder back in order to not damaged the starter. Now i thought it was the ignition switch down on the column, i was thinking the spring went bad. replaced the switch itself and thats not the problem. im thinking the lock cylinder is bad. I have a Haynes manuall and it doesnt say how to remove the lock cylinder from the 1994 model.
The key being broke is one problem, but the starter bendix not retracting is another right?
Does the lock cylinder do the retracting after ignition or is somthing else wrong?
How is the key lock cylinder removed on this model? pull steering wheel? or is there a releases tab somewhere on the column? any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Yes, Haynes really dropped the ball on this one. The '84 - '94 models apparently aren't allowed to have their lock cylinders serviced. My '93 Cherokee was damaged when it was stolen recently. I currently (following Ch. 12 Sec. 10) have the steering wheel removed, but am afraid to remove the Torx bolts I found under the turn signal assembly without knowing if there is a sequence to be followed. I am going to see if the Chilton manual has more information on this.
As for your other question, it does appear that the spring for the start position is NOT at the lock cylinder. However, the lock cylinder and actuating rod are mechanically linked and either one could be binding somewhere.

I have a 94 shop manual I got from ebay and it has the entire process...there is one on ebay right now. it is listed for 80 bucks which seems expensive but the time it has saved me has more than paid for it...over and over again. the manual also has all the body stuff in it too...very very handy book if you are working on your XJ.

I have an '88 Laredo and a Haynes manual for it. It's a great book but as noted earlier, it's sadly deficient here. My lock seems to be jamming so I'm going to pull it today. I've already tried spraying some WD40 in the lock and around the housing. The switch seems OK (but it's tough to get to). So, looks like I get to add a new puller to the tool box.

Yeah i finished mine up a week ago, i think i had t6o remove those torques head screws to get to the cylinder where the little plate actuator on ther lock cylinder itself. It turned out not to be a hard job after all.
Yes i want one of those shop manuals, i think you can also get them here
