A/C compressor r/r price???

Hey guys. Wondering if anyone has recently had their comp. replaced and how much it was w/ labor. My car is making a terrible grinding noise and all symptoms points to me needing a compressor. I just want to know how much $$$ to expect to spend if it is indeed my compressor. Im thinking $600 but I may be WAY off!!!!!!

An AC Delco is somewhere around $400-600, a GM is even worse. I snagged a remanufactured one off ebay for a mere $150 shipped. Shop around, and you could find a brand new one as low as $225-250.

Labor is the pricy part, expect at least 4 hours and maybe way more if more parts of the AC system need to be changed.

Hardtimer, don't try to run your AC system (no AC, no defrost) as your compressor has probably "grenaded" and throwing little bits of itself throughout the system. You're making the replacement job that much more difficult. It's also likely to cause overheating issues.

If you go to a GM dealer and buy GM parts, this is a $1000-$1200 repair. Suggest you call a couple of automotive cooling specialty shops and get some quotes, and check out places like GMPartsDirect, RockAuto, and VanChevrolet for the pricing online. You probably want to replace the a couple of other parts (orifice tube, for example), not just the compressor...

I am happy to say that I had my A/C compressor replaced today... AHHH, the cold air feels good ! Anyway I did quite bit of comparison shopping, but you never know with some of the online sources. What is rebuilt, what is after market, and what is the right part number since they have changed. I didn't feel comfortable with the trade offs so I went with a new Delco unit since my friend recommended I go this route.

The part number for my 97 compressor was 1136512. I ended up getting a Delco factory replacement for about $330, which is probably a bit high but it is new and a certified OEM replacment. The labor costs were about $250 which I was OK with since I was prepared for a 4-5 hour job. Sooo, for about $600 bucks I have cold air once again. My Olds mechanic recommended replacing the comp and orifice tube (which captured the debris from the compressor. He did not recommedn replacing the recon/dryer so I didn't.

I'm jealous radvra. This had to be amost 5 years ago, but I paid like $1200 and counted myself lucky I didn't get charged more. I think my mechanic did replace the dryer and it seems like one other piece, but I can't remember. I know he was swearing at it a lot and wishing he had smaller arms. His labor guide said 2.5 hours and it took him 10 or 12.

I felt fortunate to get away with the price I did...which was because I know the mechanic pretty well. I also followed his advice not to replace the dryer....which probably would have driven up the labor costs had I decided to replace this part.

Now he wants me to have the rear engine seals replaced, so I am waiting for a quote on THAT repair. I'll probably have to take out a second mortgage on my house!

Id call a local shop. My compressor went about 2 months ago and only cost me $500 total from a friend of mine. At goodyear they quoted me $750.
