Serpentine belt damage?

Hey, the guy told me that radiator fluid leaked onto the belt (just a little) and that the belt was damaged and needed to be replaced. I asked him how he could tell it was and he said you couldn't by just looking at the belt. Does that sound right?

I would not worry about a little rad. fluid on belt. Just get a flashlight & have a good look over, start engine & off & look again for any damage. The belts are very resilent.

I would suspect that the guy you were talking to just wanted to sell you a belt. As West Hill stated these belts are tough. In fact I had one go over 100K miles before it broke. (thought it had been changed) I have had these belts covered with water, antifreeze and mud and they don't show any signs of wear or damage. IF you have over 65K miles, I would suggest that you have it replaced but otherwise the belt should be fine.

Stay away from that mechenic. Everyone that posted is right. Possibly your belt tensioner is worn and tracking abit. The belt should be very tight if you put pressure on it between pulleys, "with the engine off please". Fluids will not hurt the belt unless you soak it in oil for a week. Check for cracks or un even wear on tha threads. Good luck.
