I have a 2001 GAGT1, I want to super/turbo charge it, get new intake manifold, new exaust headers, new exaust, new chip, new throttle body and other misc upgrades, I would like to know how much HP & Torque the stock tranny is good for. Thanks guys.

I seen the LA1 tranny handled up to 400hp and even more torque and still had no probs. He did have to change drive axles?

if you guys are running 250-300 or know people who are then I'll go by that. Seems that it doesnt come up as a problem when people upgrade performance.
Would those of you who have upgraded the performance and use the stock tranny please post what your running in terms of HP/Torque and if you've had any problems.

my cars torque is 271 and no problems here.
179whp@4200rpm 271lbs@3750rpm
Stock converter and tranny.
I have had gears slip once in a while , but that was before I upgraded it.
GM is just playing it safe there

Hey hows hp gonna hurt the tranny? isnt it the torque that would put most tension on the tranny?
I thought hp was a lean forward kinda power and torque was a push kind of power. *shrugs*

it is mostly torque that would load it

torque is your ability to put the power to the ground, it's the rotational force your wheels can exert.

ya , so they wouldnt really rate a tranny by hp it would be torque right?

HP is nothing. It is just a mathmatical equation. Torque is what counts.

yeah, my goal is to raise torque, especially the low end, it's very usefull for city driving.
BTW: you can find the stock Torque and HP curves here: http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpowertrain/engines/gmpow/la1.htm

I wondered many times the difference between the monte and impala's 3.4 la1 and a grand ams 3.4 la1 Ive looked and cant really see any visable difference other than the airbox desighn and reinforced engine mounts.

the GAGT, Alero, Impala and Monte Carlo all use the same engine, just slightly different configurations in terms of air intakes and transmissions and such. The Impala and Monte Carlo use the M15 tranny and the GAGT and the Alero use the M5 transmission. Sidenote: the police Impala also uses the M15; so if you ever deside to swap your tranny, consider that.
