Computer Question Help pretty please with a Cherry on top!

Well hopefully somebody can answer my question.

I currently have DSL for internet access, I would like to network my computer with another computer together, what is it that I need to do, I have network cards for both computer, and a router and the cables. Running windows ME and 98 on the other computer. Do I need to configure anything on my computer and the other computer as well? Do I have to proxy them or something I don't even know what proxy is. I know very little about computer, but just enough where I can install things, but after that I know nothing.

I know there has to be some computer genius' out there that can help me.

why the hell did you buy a router if you were just gonna network two comps? you should of just bought 2 nics for one comp and one for the other. sheesh. anyways its not too hard, check the instructions...usually they help ALOT :rolleyes: . lol

I know nothing about networking, but I do know of several people that are only doing 2 computers but still have a router :confused:

ok this will probably be the easiest way to do it.

First you need to buy a network hub/switch. Go for the hub, it will be cheaper and perfect for your use.

Then you plug the router into the hub as well as the two computers. You will then need to set the computers up so that they use the routers network address as their gateway. This means when you use the internet the computers will realise that they must go through the router to get there. Now I don't have Win98 in front of me so I'm not sure how to set this. but thats what you need to do.

Yes that helps me a lot, thanks. I think I'll go out and buy that Hub now. So the DSL cable goes into the router, the router into the hub, and the hub into the computers. Okay great thanks a lot.

I'll go a little more into detail.

You will need to buy a HUB or a Switch. If you plan to do a lot of network gaming or large file transfers I suggest the switch, otherwise save the money and buy the HUB.

Once you do that plug the router into the last port on the HUB or switch then plug the computers into anyother ports on the HUB/Switch.

Setting it up to work. Most likely DHCP will do just fine. You can check this by right clicking on the Network icon on the desktop and selecting proporties. Then edit the properties of the TCP/IP protocol and click on the DHCP tab. Check use DHCP and see if that works. If it fails you will have to do it the way someone posted before me.

If that is the case the routers IP address is most likely 10.0.0.1 that will be the numbers you have to put in for the gateway. I would suggest putting these IP addresses for the two computers. 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.3 also put a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and leave DNS alone.

And no you don't need a proxy server though they are nice. Just e-mail me or catch me on ICQ, MSN or Aim if you have any questions at all.

I beleave you will have to make a setup disk using the ME Networking Wizard if you are going to network a ME machine to a 98 Machine, me and my old room mate tried to do that and we had to run the setup disk for it to work properly. We had all kinds of problems getting it set up to were we could see each other on the network so he just ended up installing ME on his machine too. Internet sharing and TCP/IP would work, but we couldn't get the IPX network up when we were just going point to point. We finaly bought a hub and it was all gravy.
