I started a thread about my car which is here
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=235694
And now I'm thinking its not the motor but something worse, the transmission. Its starting to pisss me off, when I'm going about 40 and above and punch it the rpm's go to 4,000 and stay there and I dont get any faster and it wont switch unless I let off the gas. But if I take is slow it will shift right(but even when I take it slow the car is way to slow and I have to put the gas pedal about 3/4 the way down)... Today I was going up a bridge and was losing speed AGAIN.... I have no clue and I'm fixing to just run it through a bunch of water when it floods and go oops..j/k Now I can expect to pay way to much than what the car is worth. But stupid me got a 6yr loan and still have 2 1/2 yrs left and still owe 10,500 on it. You think the dealer or a shop could hook a computer up to it to see what the problem is......
P.S. DONT BUY AN OLDSMOBILE, And if you have had the same problem please let me know what was the problem.......

I have seen issues on other threads where people have had their transmissions replaced at about 112-120K miles.

When was the last time you had the fluid changed in your tranny? I saw in the other thread that you had like 97000 miles on the car. You should get it changed at least every 50000 miles which means that you should be due for your 2nd in 3000 miles. I believe the manual says to change it every 50000 miles but if you drive it hard I'd change it every 30000 miles.

I've changed it twice. Once at about 60k and the last time when I started to have problems.... I believe the manual says 100k miles. And 150k for the anti-freeze. I think GM just wants the car to mess up so you will more than likely have to get them to fix it........ But I'm taking it in tom. to get fixed. So I will update....

Don't take it to the stealership for tranny issues. I'd go to Aamco.

actually it's not the shop had I said that I take it to GM then yes it would be the shop.... And did you come up with the pot remark all by yourself, you should be proud. Anyways
The guy said that the computer said that the mass air sensor was out (I thought the service engine light would blink if it was able to show up on the computer) and my air compressor is totally out. So its time to start calling around to junk yards for one.

Hey moron, you can't have a screen name like that and not expect to get comments...Anyway, what the fuck is the air compressor?? Are you talking about the AC compressor because that's the only compressor in your car. And I agree that if the MAF sensor was out, I would think it would cause a MIL to go off.

good god dont post if you have to be an azz, and yes I expect teenagers to talk crap about my sign-in but not adults. And sorry I meant ac compressor. Man chill the hell out, just cause you had a bad day doesn't mean you can take it out on someone else.. Smoke a joint..........

Your calling him a teenager but your telling him to smoke a joint. Very mature. And yeah if you MAF sensor is out then your car will run like shit.

What does it do. And could I have replaced it myself? It's costing 400 bucks..
JTrujillo86

And FYI genius, I'm 17...but yet somehow I still think I'm a bit more mature...
$400 for the MAF is a rip. You can do it in less than 30 minutes. I was told though when it went out on my Malibu that after the install it would have to "activated" with a GM Scan Tool. I doubt that though. I would just try and plug a new one in and see what happens. The MAF is located just past the air cleaner box. It's plugged into the hose that goes from the air cleaner box to the intake.

A maf sensor measures the amount of air going into your engine and regulates fuel accordingly.
It's real easy to change it's right on top of the engine bay next to your air filter box. If I was you I'd go aftermarket and get a Granatelli or Pro-M maf they'll probably cost about the same as a new one from GM and you'll get HP gains with the aftermarket.

I'm just going with the stock as an aftermarket wont make it much more HP. I mean if it made my car go from 9 seconds to 7 seconds 0-60 then ya it would be worth it but come on the car has 170HP. Not like its going to push 200HP.......
jamcllw
06-14-2004, 03:11 PM
I see your point but to me it would look like the prime opportunity to upggrade. And I'm very close to having 200 HP at the crank. I'm sure a upgraded MAF sensor would put me over with all my upgrades.

ya I was suprised when I seen that the alero took 9 seconds 0-60 and 17 seconds in the 1/4 mile, thats just plain awful........

I don't know which 1's you've seen but mine ran a 15.8 at 89 m.p.h. 1/4 mile when it was bone stock. Last time I ran it it was 15.23 at 95 m.p.h. after minor mods.

Replace the MAF and unplug the NEG terminal on the battery for about 15 min. Reconnect it and start it. This should correct the problem. It takes about 100 keystarts for the computer to "relearn" your driving habits.

So potisyourfriend....the problem you were experienceing was because of a MAF sensor? Thats the same problem im having. Now when i go to replace the MAF sensor...do i just cut the wires going to the sensor, and splice a new one in?
jamcllw
09-07-2004, 03:43 PM
DO NOT CUT ANYTHING!!!
There's a plug on the MAF sensor that can be disconected. Unplug the one and plug in the other. You don't have to cut anything.

gotcha, well heres the problem.... i went and looked at my MAF, and it fell out of my aftermarket intake tube, so it was lying in grimey stuff on my tranny block. I cleaned it with a q-tip and plugged it back in...car ran a little bit better, but problem with tranny still exists. If i got a new MAF do u think it would fix it? It was sitting on the hot tranny block for probably a few good weeks, so it might of fried something?
jamcllw

I've heard that the MAF sensors can affect the tranny. It's very possible that you fried something if it was in direct contact with a hot part of the car. A new one is going to probably cost a pretty penny. I'd look into the aftermarkets if you find out that it is definatly your MAF.

My '02 Alero has lost power and has been doing the same thing you described for about a year now. I've had it in the shop 4 times (still under warranty) and they always hook it up to the computer and tell me nothing is wrong. I guess they HAVE to get a code before they believe you. I have also pondered the possibility that it may be the tranny, but the car is just too new.
My car has also experienced other weird problems like the CRUISE light coming on randomly and doesn't go off until I shut the car off. It has done this twice in the past month and both times I drove straight to the dealer while it was on. They saw the light and got a look on their face like I was stupid and had the cruise switch on or something so that is the first thing they try. Of course it has nothing to do with the switch, so they hook it up to the computer and guess what?? NO CODES!!! They have been randomly replacing parts trying to fix it. So far they have replaced the guage cluster...still did it....and just last week they replaced the body control module. It seems to be fixed for now, but it's so intermittent it may be a month before I know for sure.
Well, enough of my Alero woes....if anyone is having the same problem and happens to get this solved, then please post!!

all i can find are 3.4L MAF sensors...i have the 2.4L. All teh 3.4L maf sensors look like a bracket with the sensor plug in attached. My maf sensor is a piece of plastic that plugs into the tube. does anyone know where i can find a maf sensor for the 2.4?
jamcllw
09-09-2004, 12:30 PM
I thought you had a 3.4L. I'm not sure but I don't think that the 2.4L has MAF sensors. I know that they have MAP sensors but I've never heard of a MAF on the 2.4L motors.

I don't know if it is the MAP sensor that's gone or not. I don't know much about the 2.4L motors. Here's a link that shows what 1 looks like and how much they cost.
