My girls 89 z24 stalls once in a while when she's stopped at a red light or when going on reverse. The car starts to idle up and down and at times it turns off. What could this be? It only happens when the car is at a stop, not when is actually going.

Well I have a 91 z24 and Mine did that too.. Not to long ago. Believe it or not the problem with mine was the cars computer. I checked EVERY sensor that that car had and still didn't find the problem. So I kept replaced sensors one buy one with my buddies car because he has the same one.. Finally I took the computer out of his and threw it in mine.. and walla. It was working fine.
I didn't want to pay for a new computer because they were mad money. SO I looked around and found a rebuilt computer for $160 and all I had to do is switch my EPROM out into the new one.
Problem solved.
But if could be the rollover sensor on your trany may be defective.
Hope that helps.

you might have to bring it to a shop to speed up the idle

My 89' Z24 has the same problems along with some more. Does your girlfriends or anyone elses smoke too? Mine stals when its not gettign gas and most of the time when I go to stop it feels like the breaks give out for a sec then it comes to a sudden stop. I have no idea whats causing this and dont want to spend a ton of money figuring out what it is. After all its an 89' with 145,000 miles on it

That's a piece of cake It's the fuel filter you have to change them every 6months on the 89 Z24 that's the most important part on that car.

I also have a Z24 (2.8 auto) that likes to stall after the battery has been disconnected. Is there a quick reset that I can do at home?

Change the fuel filter and get the idle thing cleaned out.

i gotta 88 z24 and the thing chugg's and stalls.......it's a 4spd auto and if i use gear 1 and 2 im fine, but when i put it into Drive, all of a sudden it revs low and goes into 4th gear when im only going 60km/h........when im at light's it stalls and the engine barely turns over, then if i start it back up again andput it into gear, it stalls, so when it was bein used last time it did that, had to rev it high up into 7 grand and drop it into gear to get it going, i noticed a burning smell coming from it too.............is this a very common issue? i need help!
also im planning on putting a 3.1L in there and converting it to a 5 spd to avoid tehse problems if they dont stop

I am having the same problem with mine, just had the fuel filter changed, that did not solve my problem, just changed the computer and that did not solve the problem also had the Idle control changed and that did not work either...........seems to run fine during the day, but when I go home at night from work, when I press my breaks my light will dim, will be fine for a bit but once I get close to home the and go to brake lights will get dim and then car will stall.............please help I love this car and don't want to spend a bundle.

z24cruiser, if the lights dim and such, it would sound to me like you have an electrical problem somewhere, perhaps you should consider hookin up a voltmeter somewhere in the light ciruit and see what happens when u hit the brakes and then consult your local mechanic (im not to sure where in the elec. system that would be)

HEY z24 cruiser i had the exact same problem and it is the idle air control valve it controls all of the idleing speeds and makes your engine run faster so you dont lose power when you use electrical components like brakes ac and radio. it is located on the throttle body and it is a little electric moter that spins a valve into a port to change how much air enters. brand new the part runs around $70.
