SR20DET Datsun 510-In progress

I want to duplicate Rob Fuller's '71 510 SR20DET(S13) in Go Green.
There are 2 hurdles I need to get over for this build, based on the 1/25 Revell Tuner kit:
1) Sourcing/detailing the SR20 Motor and turbo/IC piping
2) Fitting front wheels/tires
Another problem is that Rob's car doesn't have the bubble flares, and it's not within my ability to form stock fenders so oh well :smile:

This car is also in the June '04 isue of SportCompactCar. I'll update with better pics when I visit the shop.

I'm using Tamiya Light Green for the body.

I stole the S15 SR20DET top end from a 1/24 die-cast Silvia and mated it with the L16 bottom end from the REvell kit. It looks rough right now.

I'll use this exhaust manifold and somehow create a bottom mount turbo. Any ideas on how to make one?

I flipped the crossmember(like on the 1:1) and I'll use the BRE oil pan to mimic the Greddy one.

Good thing about this kit is that it accepts larger than stock wheels in back, so no inner well cutting! The front is a different story. If you want to lower it the inner fender gets in the way and it looks quite lame. I'm working on that.

If I can open up the grille maybe a front mount IC will work.
It will be a tight fit with the IC piping and wiring, but I like the challenge!!

The lime SR uses a simple log-style exhaust manifold. You can replicate this easily with some styrene rods, heat and glue.

BTW, what are those 4 things on the intake manifold?

You don't have the skill to get rid of the bubble fenders? What? Sure you do! In fact, this would be a great opportunity to try that sort of modification. On this car, it would be relatively simple. Sand off or cut off the bubble flares, use sheet styrene to fill the arches, and cut and sand them to shape, then use a small peice of styrene strip to make the small factory flare, and sand it smooth. It would be a lot easier to try it on a slab sided 510 than on a car with more curves. Plus, if you screwed up, you'd be out what, a body from an $8 kit? I say go for it! You gotta start body mods somewhere*, and this seems straightforward enough to be a great first attempt.

* Assuming you want to start body mods.

looks like a great project. I agreee with willimo. you should try sanding off the bubble flares. plus the kits are soo easy to get, you screw up this body. get another kit, then you have spare parts to use from the other kit.

hmmm without the kit flares, wouldnt that make it even harder to fit large wheels on?

Orion37170-I was too lazy to open the Watanabe package, I will definitely be using them(and Brembo brakes). The Sparco's are for fitting.

The "4 things", I believe are the fuel injector solenoids on a Greddy-type S15 SR20DET intake manifold. Check Mario Lozano's dime:

Willimo/86SR5/SchuberT- Putty work is just another can of worms I don't want to get into! How do I shape a correct(factory) fender flare/opening/radius from a blob of goo? You guys are too good at this. I know I have to start somewhere, but I think I can get away with leaving the flares as is.
And SchuberT brings up a good point. The front wheels/tires won't fit(properly) without the flares. Yeah, that's my excuse :naughty:

She's unfinished right now. I had pics but they came out all blurry so I gotta retake them. I ordered the rs watanabes and they are waiting to be painted and put on. Im going to probably lower her 1mm to 2mm in the front because with the 17" watanabes the front looked like it was higher than the back. Ill post'm when I get a chance dont worry!

the green 510/1600 uses a stock S13 manifold. and the little 'things' on the intake manifold of the S15 head is 4 spare injector bosses off the Greddy intake manifold. so you can run smaller injectors instead of 4 big ones. mainly used on hi po SR20 drag cars

I've come back to this project because of my re-kindled Datsun pride...I drove an R34 Skyline!! Anyways I've been leading a very charmed Datsun life and it's just what I needed to get me back into modeling.

I decided to uses the Hasegawa Bluebird 4-door kit instead of the 2-door Revell kit. First, I can bypass the bubble flare removal/stock flare fabrication on the Revell kit. The Hasegawa kit is also 1/24 scale, has beautiful stock flares, and a really pretty front grille.
I figured out a way to make the 4-door into a 2-door. The only difference in 1:1 is the door!! So I went to my friend Dan's(remember YELO510 I made?) and took some measurements on coupe/sedan door lengths. In 1/24 all I had to do is extend the door ~5mm and move the pillar back accordingly...

The tough part of course will be filling in the rear door panel line(hence my post about puttying panel lines), scribing a new panel line and filling in the the door handles.
Another modification to the Hasegawa kit is the RHD dash. I converted it to LHD, just need to clean it up a bit:

I might re-do the intake manifold in solder to better model the "low port" intake Nissan used.
My main concern: The "Nissan" and "Twin Cam 16 Valve" lettering on the cam cover. I need to paint it Go Green. What can I do about the decals? Can someone make me some please :naughty:

Took my Focus to an open track event...
I completely owned a BMW Z4 and surprised a few 350z’s in the turns. I did however get reamed in the front straight by higher hp cars.
I rode with Rob in the Skyline and we were doing 120mph+ by the end of the Tower, where I would be doing almost 95mph in the Focus!!!
I had some misconceptions about FWD but driving in the wet made me a believer!
Enjoy the pics and don’t miss the short video clips. I got some wet skidpad action, Ben Sutton drifted around almost 720 degrees!

PS, The group ate dinner at Denny’s in Vacaville. We had maybe 10-12 350zs/Gs and Donna’s R34 Skyline. Out of nowhere a Silver R33 pulls up, no joke! Turns out someone had called up the R33 owner saying there was a huge Nissan meet at Denny’s and a blue R34 was there, so he drove out. Check out the pictures!

You were worried about sanding off some flares cuz you were scared....but you don't mind turning a 4 door into a 2?? Seems like alot more work to me but glad to see this project back on the go and whatever works I guess. Looking good, I like your new engine choice.

I actually saw a 510 kit today on the clearance rack, if anyone is looking for one I suppose I could pick it up...Love the color, btw

On the motors, I'd go with the "S15" top end personally. The "S13" top end really doesn't look much like a SR20 at all, its too wide and square - it looks far more like an FJ20ET.
