1992 Marquis Cruise Control

The other day the cruise control stopped working my 1992 marquis.
When you press the " set " button the dash board lights up stating that cruise control it on, yet the car doesn't even try to hold the speed.
What might be causing this? Bad sensor or the complete cruise control module? Truthfully I don't know how the system is setup, perhaps someone can give me details.
