what is a 1g/2g DSM?

I am really new to the DSM world, and everyone is talking about 1g and 2g Eclipse/Talons. I have no idea what this means, but would like to learn.

secondly 1G refers to eclipse's,talons, and lasers built from 1989-1994.
2G refers to all talons and eclipses built from '95-'98 and eclipses built in '99.
