shift knob removal for 97 z24

hi, this may sound really stupid, but i've destroyed half my console just to take off my stock shift knob. I know it has something to do with U clips but still have no idea how to get it off. I can't even get in there with a flat blade screw driver or anything. PLEASE HELP ME!

If you put the car in 2nd or 4th gear you should have plenty of room to pry U-clip out with a flathead screwdriver. If that still doesn't work, you may be able to get at it with a small set of needlenose pliers.
